Peety by Angelo Orazio Pregoni for O`Driu 2013

Hello APJ,

When autumn arrives in the Pacific North West I head for my stash of vintage, spicy orientals. This fall I’ve been using a lot of Basile EDP (I prefer it to Opium), Lagerfeld KL (the perfume strength) and my new favorite spice with a twist, the Italian, musky oriental O`Driu Peety.

A Review and a Problem

Peety O`Driu FragranticaPhoto Stolen Fragrantica

Fragrantica gives these featured accords in one line:
Tobacco, jasmine, rose, sandalwood, tonka bean and pink pepper

I’m sure all the scent savvy APJs are well aware of the quirky marketing that pushed Peety, for a brief, smelly moment, to the forefront of the fragrance blog-o-sphere. Just in case you haven’t heard, Peety can be your very own personal fragrance (be-spoke, so to speak) simply by adding approximately 1ml of your very own pee to 49ml of Peety. Yes! That’s right! Perfumers have been doing this forever. What’s a little pee among friends compared to musk pods, whale poo (and goo), civet secretions and African stone?

After a brief flurry of Peety excitement, repulsion and even outrage, not much more has been said about Peety. To make up for that, here is my brief review of O`Driu Peety:

Before personalization Peety is definitely a classic, animalic oriental. On my skin the top notes are a quick blast of sweaty cinnamon, perhaps some clove, bitter orange and pink pepper. This spicy mélange dries to a luscious blend of jasmine, tobacco and rose eventually finishing with sandalwood, dark patchouli and oak moss or some sort of mossy lichen. Amber and tonka bean seem to float through the life of the composition, in varying degrees, from beginning to end. The sillage is moderate to strong and longevity at least eight hours on the skin and considerably more on clothing.

Peety by O`Driu Problem + GIVEAWAY

Here a question for you, a sort of “story problem”. I have never been employed as a lab rat. I’m not particularly good at math, hate measuring things and am notoriously cheap when it comes to buying fragrance. I would like to purchase a full bottle of Peety but I don’t want to add pee to more than 1ml of the scent. In order to personalize Peety it is necessary to add 10 drops of urine to 49 ml of fragrance. Keeping in mind that 1ml can contain from 10 to over 20 drops (depending on the dropper size), what approximate fraction of a drop of pee would I have to add to a 1ml decant to make O`Driu’s Peety my Peety?

  1. Azar! Greetings from my pee-free kitchen. I will sign myself into the nearest bloody loony bin when I start adding pee to my perfume.
A good read nevertheless. It falls into my ENP category though.
    Lots of love

    • Come on, Cookie! Peety is very nice without the pee! It’s almost too classic for its own good and I imagine that is why O’Driu needed such a startling marketing hook. OH! And it is re-assuring to know that your kitchen is a pee-free zone! And the looney bin? I’m living there already. Do you have a favorite spicy oriental (could be a cookie or a perfume!)

  2. Eau my goodness! I’m going to say Shalimar (in the original bottle) is my favourite oriental, and keep it a long way away from the loo. A very long way. Following by email! xx

    • Yes Jaybee! You must keep your lovely Shalimar away from the loo. My bottle is a 1950’s version but still treasured and protected. You are in!

  3. 0.02 drops….desert dwellers add less as pee more concentrated?
No no, not going down this road!
Orientals are my favourite type of scent though, I wore Opium religiously and Mystere by Rochas, sadly diluted now.

You are IN! Thank you for solving my problem. To proceed do I suck up one drop in a little syringe, determine its exact ml and divide that by 0.02?
And yes, Mystere was a beauty!

  4. Peety is GROSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Orientals are all loved in my books; Classic Guerlains, Rochas Mystere ( TY Jackie b.!!), classic Opium and Cinema from YSL, Goutals Orientalists….Wish Andy Tauer would take a crack at this category 🙂 Incense Extreme is the closest 🙂 :-)We follow a la e-mail, FB, and blog.

  5. What’s KL? I follow by email. I have avoided the urinous debate but you’ve finally got me: “Perfumers have been doing this forever.” Doing what, now? Adding any old urine from some random omnivorous mammal who stinks and needs perfume because of said stench? I think that what perfumers have been doing forever is thoroughly investigating the scent characteristics of all the materials at their disposal, and trying things out to see what works. I don’t think that the folks who have forever been spritzing their pee hither and thither are properly referred to as perfumers. Heavy drinkers, maybe?

  6. What Leathermountain said! I can recall a really unfunny riff by some 80s-era comedian about how wonderful his own gas smelled, but unless you have that level of self-absorption, Peety is probably best left alone. I admit that I go crazy for ambergris in perfume, but that’s aged and glorified whale poop, excrement that died and went to heaven, not the earthly thing.
Say, Portia, I think I’ll do a post sometime about “excrement that died and went to heaven.”

      • Hi Feral jasmine,
No sense of adventure? Peety is lovely without any additions and worth a try. I suppose many people are repulsed not only by the pee concept but by the marketing, which seems such a desperate grab for market share. You are IN!

  7. Hello there, leathermountain!

I am duly chastised. I suspected that this unsupported and cavalier statement would draw some flack and it did! The “magic” of words has enticed you into this urinous debate!

Re KL: I believe it was created for Karl Lagerfeld in 1983. I’ve seen it listed as a chypre but to me it is a beautiful oriental. The fan shaped pure perfume bottle, designed by Lagerfeld himself, is gorgeous.

  8. Dear all, the difference between Peety and other perfumes is simply that Peety is unique. Peety is different (or will be different) from each other Peety. Peety is a person! The moralism around the scent creates the same game as moralism about art. I am not looking for mkt, indeed in reality you are looking for arguments. If you like to speack about Peety, Peety will therefore be your topic, silly or caught, it just depends on you. So I wish you a life full of sex, or if you prefer ethic sex. A hug

    • Hello and thank you for clarifying your intent when you created Peety!
Please understand that I love Peety as a stand alone fragrance and am wearing some of my little sample right now. It is beautiful just the way it is and I have trouble understanding why it needs anything else. Also I am reticent to waste my sample in order to personalize it. I’m afraid I might not like the result. That being said, can I purchase Peety in the USA or only on your website?

  9. I wonder if O’Driu is having us on. I can picture their chemists and marketing people rolling on the floor, howling with laughter at the idea of customers actually taking this seriously and peeing in their perfume. The idea is so funny it makes me pee in my pants. (No need to enter me in the draw, thanks!).

    • Thanks for joining the conversation, fleurdelys! I have wondered that too! I have also wondered what kind of testing they did on the product to determine if pee would work in it or not!

  10. I was wondering how Peety was as a stand-alone perfume. Sounds like it’s actually quite nice. Vintage Bal a Versailles is in my top 5 favorite orientals and to my nose, the heavy civet in it or any perfume is not scanky or dirty at all. I follow by email.

    • Hi Maya,
It is quite nice without any “personlization”. I think you would probably like it. I am wearing it right now in its “pure” form. Peety is warm and spicy and perfect for cooler weather. You are IN!

  11. Hi Mom –

Interesting way to market a perfume. I see in your comments you have elected to leave your sample alone… probably a good call! I haven’t really liked Orientals in the past… maybe I should try some again to see if I’ve changed my mind.

I actually purchased two 1ml samples from Surrender to Chance, one to use “as is” and one (perhaps?) to “personalize”. Do you remember which orientals you tried and didn’t like?

I just wanted to say that it’s a really bizarre idea with that perfume and I can’t imagine it being a successful marketing idea: I, for one, do not what to test it even without any… personalization.

  14. For 1ml, you’d need 0.98ml perfume to 0.02ml pee. Heh. Good luck with that. You’re kind of looking at the equivalent of maybe dipping a the pointy end of pin into pee and getting a drop from that. Not sure that kind of quantity would be worthwhile?

Maybe go 10ml, so 9.8 : 0.2 ml – Assuming that 10 drops actually does equal 1ml, you’d need two drops.

    🙂

I estimate that you would need to add one fifth of a drop of pee to your 1ml of perfume. Urk…terrible thought!

    • Hi Kathie,
Thank you for working on solving my problem. I still haven’t decided if I really want to despoil my little sample of pure Peety with even a tiny touch of pee. I enjoy it as it is, but who knows what might really be in the pristine sample? Oh dear! You are IN!

  16. How fitting. You’re talking about pee and I’m tending to a dog with a urinary tract infection.
How much to add? Well, when my uncle used to make a martini he would pour the vermouth in the glass, swirl it around, and dump it out. The he’d add the gin. So, for such a small quantity I’d say put a drop in an empty vial, dump it out, and put the perfume in. Enjoy?

  17. A fifth of a drop of pee, which sounds logistically complicated on so many levels…my favorite oriental right now is Chergui (I have not tried any of the others you mentioned). Thank you for the draw! I follow by email.

    • Hi Nemo,

Thanks for helping me with my problem and you are IN! I may or may not “personalize” but at least now I have some idea of how much and have had a few suggestions on “how to”.

I haven’t tried Chergui but from what I’ve read it sounds like a great cold weather oriental. The fragrances I mentioned above are all from the 1980’s, the big hair and shoulder pad days. The scents from that decade are also usually big and in your face, especially the orientals (and there were a lot of those in the 80’s).
