Recently there was a very excited thrill through the frag community. One of the biggest discounters, FragranceNet, was having an end of year clearance on eBay. I think they were getting rid of the years returns and calling them 95% full. The postage was a bit of a bummer to Australia but still the deals were so good it was hard to pass up. Disclaimer! I wore this the night it arrived and I may have overspritzed. Jin got in the car and within a minute was asking what fragrance I was wearing because it’s disgusting and so big and reminds him of the smell they spray in old peoples homes to get rid of the old people smell. His head was pounding so badly from it that he had to take headache tablets and open his window to full. Poor boy.
I on the other hand am swept away by Amouage Gold Man.

On opening I get a fabulous blast of incense, the rose and lily of the valley play backing roles and were they not mentioned in the notes list I’d be hard pressed to pick them. What I smell is an animalic frankincense that is like a 1000 x blast of the little pebbles you can buy in the Middle East markets. Patchouli and woods are present after a few minutes and white flowers but not specifically jasmine, my nose also picks some daffodil/narcissus. There is something CHANEL No 5-ish about Amouage Gold Man that I like very much.
Then the whole fragrance turns beautifully soapy on me, expensive, waxy soap like in the 20th century. I’m not sure what the notes are now, the scent has become Amouage Gold Man for me now. A conglomerate scent that is sexy and big but not overbearing (Jin would beg to differ). I find it a very comfortable scent to wear. Intricate, harmonious and nuanced; like lying on a silk, hand knotted rug from Kashmir and still being able to smell the market you bought it in and remembering the people who are fun to bargain with and smile so happily.
Next morning I still have traces of Amouage Gold Man lingering, buzzing over my skin. Soft woods and resins of no name that have now melded with my own scent; me but not me. Better by far….

My love of Amouage is all your fault, Portia!
A slight familiarity was turned into an obsession right here when I won samples of Interlude Man and Woman. I totally fell for the Man version. Interlude Man was also the fragrance that started me writing for the APJ crew.
I equally love Memoir Woman. Just bought a big FB for a super bargain price on BeautySpin. Ubar Woman is another favorite. All the Amouage bottles are lovely and the shapes amusing to me, as the house appears to have assigned stereotypical gender designations to the bottles – short and round for Woman (I relate to that) and taller and and more angular for Man. But I never mind that. As far as I’m concerned everything Amouage is unisex.

Ooops! Sorry but kinda not sorry. If you are going to love a house of fragrance then Amouage is a pretty good one to be stuck on.

Yes, all are unisex. More so even than I would say that, Amouage really can gender bend.

Actually, Portia, I don’t think I have ever tried an Amouage that I didn’t love or at least like! No scrubbers at all. I love my sample of Fate Woman and even groove on Fate Man – despite or because of the cumin…

The one I adore is Jubilation 25 – but I am saddened by its current state. I was unable to save up in time to buy it before they stripped the part I really loved out. I would still wear the current formulation … but with a sense of loss.
I like most Amouage in general… but often I have longevity issues with them – Gold, in any version unfortunately gets eaten by my skin. Likewise Ubar, which is delicious. But I like Dia and Ciel for summer. Likewise Fate. Interlude (male and female) gives me a headache, but I adore the men’s Fate.

Just goes to show how different chemistries are. Gold man and Ubar are faves of mine because they last on my usually scent eating skin.

Interlude Man! It is all time and I always get good comments when I wear it (always wear it at night as it is too heavy for the daytime).
I do love Gold Man too as it reminds me somehow of the sadly discontined Gucci3. I purchased the sample pack for men because they had much more appeal for me than the womens range.

I love old Amouages including Gold (both versions), Dia Men, Jubilation (both versions), Epic Man etc. What do you think about the current direction of the house. Christopher Chong is, indeed, talented but I am not a fan of the house’s new direction. Lack of information may lead to wrong conclusions but I cannot determine whether the new direction of Mr. Chong’s idea or his hands are being forced by the owner family

I think it’s hard to stay current and would hate to be in a multinational business right now.
My first OPUS purchase was last month, OPUS IX. It’s the first one that has spoken to me enough to pay retail for a FB. I also liked Sunshine and have a FB of Fate Woman. So for me Amouage is still going strong.
Everything has to evolve, even though I too find change discomforting.

You already know how much I adore Amouage, except the price.
I had the opportunity to get Gold Man and Gold Woman in Harrods for 50% off back in 2013 and instead I settled on Jubilation 25. It spoke to me and still does.
I did manage to get a bottle of Gold Woman but Gold Man, not yet. I found Gold Woman opulent and OTT, in the best way. Your description makes me want to try it again.
My current obsession is Journey Woman which I find warm and elegant. I have been known to pop into David Jones for no reason other than a spritz of Journey Woman.
Poor Jin. Hope he comes around on Gold Man.

I’m curious, to know from Jin, how many ‘old people’s homes’ he has been in? And what ‘old people’s homes’ smell like? Quite offended

Hey Sally-Anne,
Jin was working for a company that looked after all the Anglicares in Sydney so he was in them every day for a year or so. He would come home and shower, then spritz something to get the smell out of his mind. His nose is 100 times more sensitive than mine and he finds some scents absolutely repellent. Even the first 2 minutes of my beloved Shalimar send him running till it’s burned off a little.
There is something in Gold that reminds him of the air scenting agent they use in the Anglicares.

I haven’t tried many Amouages (perhaps this is for the best, I hear they are pricey), but this review was hilarious – though I feel for Jin’s migraine. I hope he and Amouage Gold can become better friends in the future. 🙂
