Saturday Question: What Was or Would Be Your Wedding Perfume?

Hello Fellow Fumies,

At APJ we have a Saturday Question. Everyone gets to chime in with an answer, chat with other responders and it’s a fun event each week. Taking sides never means taking offence and everyone keeps it respectful and light, even though we can sometimes trawl the depths.

The idea is you’ll see it on the weekend or chime in through the week. Hopefully you will come back regularly and see if anyone has responded to your comment and you can reply to them. The aim is to generate real conversation and connection even though we are scattered around the globe.

Saturday Question: What Was or Would Be Your Wedding Perfume?

We talked recently about Wedding Perfume. Well I’m getting married tomorrow and on top of everything else that needs to be organised my mind has been going round and round wondering what I’ll wear. I’m embarrassed to admit, even to myself, how much brain time this has been taking.

I rejected some of my most obvious favourites like Shalimar, Miss Dior, Liberté,  Equistrius, Mohur and others because I wear them so much that the significance might get lost. It had to be something I like enough to reach for but not something so ubiquitous that it loses impact. Also I wanted it to be beautiful and noticeable but sheer enough not to be the star of the show.

My Answer:

Rahelle by Neela Vermeire Creations 2016

Mohur Neela Vermeire Straight Milan 2017

Violets, leather and osmanthus tether a sheer white floral to the earth. Throughout its lifespan though Rahele keeps feeling and smelling like it’s reaching for the stars. Nothing could fragrantly actuate my vision of love and partnership better.

It will be wonderful too to have my buddy Neela wrapped around me for strength and centre during a very big, emotional day. After years of fighting for equality in Australia finally we are free to marry the man we love.

My Saturday Question to you is:

  1. Congratulations Portia and Jin! I wish you a wonderful wedding day. My wedding scent was Atélier Cologne Silver Iris.

  2. Well, I was married in 1963 at age 18. Dumb really. But we’re still married so I lucked out! I wore Arpege by Lanvin. Not discovering Shalimar for another year, Arpege with its cool control and not too sweet flowers was my idea of sophistication. It was gifted to me by a family friend who knew that I loved Perfume and at that time wore drug store scents, Wind Song, Dorothy Gray’s Safari, Tourjois Moi, it was all I could afford from my allowance.

  3. Congratulations, Portia and Jin! I wish you a long and happy marriage.

I’ll imagine a parfum version of Douceur de Siam, otherwise I’d need to designate an attendant as the bride-spritzer.

  4. Have a fabulous day tomorrow! Love the perfume choice…I don’t remember what I wore, it was pre-rabbit hole, but maybe now also a Neela Vermeire, Trayee.
Make sure you post lots of pix!

  5. Oh! I am so happy for you and Jin! I wish you an eternity of happiness and contentment together. I was married (briefly) over 40 years ago and I think I wore White Shoulders by Evyan. That’s used to be a “good” drugstore fragrance back in the day.

I have been a happy, single old dyke for too many years now to even consider dating, never mind marriage, but I am ecstatic that us queerdos can now legally tie the knot if we are so inclined.

  6. Beautiful choice, Portia! I hope it’ll always remind you both of this amazing day. Have a fantastic wedding, darlings!

I don’t think I wore anything special on my wedding day, not that it matters, anyway: I’m a different person now (with a much better sense of smell & scent education if I may say so). If I ever get married again, I’ll probably wear Chant d’aromes.

  7. Rahele is so special! Congrats Portia and Jin, have a wonderful, happy, loving day. I don’t recall my own wedding perfume (20 years ago!), if I even wore perfume- long before I went down the rabbit hole. I believe I owned a bottle of Michael Michael Kors at the time, so it’s possible I wore that, white flowers and all. I had just finished grad school so I definitely didn’t buy anything new. I don’t think I would choose white flowers today – probably something spicier.

  8. I might have worn B de Boucheron. Pre-perfumista days, obviously. If I could go back in time I would have worn Heure Exquise. There is something about HE that feels like a celebration.

  9. Congratulations Portia and Jin! I am celebrating your marriage with you in thought, and wishing you a beautiful marriage as you support and love each other through your lives together. Wonderful choice of perfume! I wore the original Tiffany parfum when I married in 1999. I have always loved fragrance, although that was pre-rabbit hole and fragrance obsession. However, even at that stage in my life, I also selected a not-every-day perfume, or one that I associated with any other time in my life. I ended up not loving the fragrance for daily wear and no longer own the bottle sadly. I’d love to re-visit it.

  10. CONGRATULATIONS!!!! You will smell fantastic, P!!! I also want to know what Jin will be wearing!

No wedding for me…we eloped…but we were married under a stone gazebo with the wedding planner of the gorgeous mountain house we stayed at as our witness. I wore Gap Heaven. It was the perfume I wore on our first date, the only perfume the hubs ever said “Wow , you smell really good” and what I wore the entire year exclusively during our courtship. A cheapie but goodie.

Wishing you all the best…you truly deserve this happiness xxoo

  11. Dear Portia (and Jin)! I’m so happy for you and wish you the best day ever tomorrow and many years of happiness together.
I’ll wear Rahele (from a sample) later tonight to celebrate your special day.

On my wedding day I wore the only true love perfume for me at that time – Lancôme Climat. Since it’s still one of my favorites, and I wear it only for special occasions, I would have chosen it again if I were to rewind time (and I don’t plan on any new weddings in this lifetime, so no need to come up with anything else).

  12. Congratulations Portia and Jin! If I can find my Rahele decant (and I have a good idea where it is), I will wear it in your honor.

My fantasy wedding perfume is Opardu. It is very pretty and wearing it makes me very happy!

  13. For my first wedding many years ago I can’t even remember what I wore. My second wedding was on a beach on the Gold Coast in Oz, and I wore Michael Kors Island, which I thought was quite fitting. Can’t get hold of it anymore to bring back that olfactory memory
Dear Portia &I Jin, I hope you have an absolute blast on your special day, and I wish you both many years of health and love, with occasional outbursts of sheer unmitigated hell😂 ( that’s my and hubby’s in-house joke.) We want loads of pics! Hopefully at this moment you’re tucked up in your cosy cot having a sweet dream and resting your fried brains.

  14. Congratulations Portia and Jin. If I do get married, my wedding fragrance might be Cuiron and I may ask my wife to wear Nombre Noir unless she already has something in mind in which case I would respect her wishes, and similarly, if there is a fragrance she wants me to wear, I might choose than over Cuiron 🙂

  15. A huge CONGRATULATIONS to you both!!!!! I wish you many wonderful years together.

As for a perfume…I’d probably go either Big White Floral or something super classic like a Dior/Chanel/Hermes. I like to think I’m not a traditional person, so the classic perfume would be a nod to tradition without actually going for the white dress, and all the other stuff. Heck, I don’t even want the wedding! 🙂

  16. Dear Portia (and Jin, of course): congratulations! I am very happy for you both; it was such a positive thing when the Supreme Court in the US ruled in favor of gay marriage rights. If I remember correctly, I wore Diorissimo on my wedding day, to go with the lilies of the valley I carried in my bouquet and my husband had as a boutonniere. Sending you many wishes for joy and happiness!

  17. Congratulations Portia & Jin. I hope your day is full of love and fun. Take the time to enjoy the day – it goes by in a moment!

I married in the middle of December – Duchess Satin and 38 degrees! I sprayed myself all over with Dior Eau Svelte and spent the day in a freesia haze – divine!

  18. Portia dear – I will be thinking of you and Jin tomorrow! And what an inspiration to choose, not only a beautiful scent, but a friend’s. Congratulations to you both!

I don’t remember what I wore to my wedding, it was so long ago, but it was summer and I had roses in my bouquet that actually smelled like roses (no horrid scentless hothouse horrors) so anything I wore was no doubt a distant second to the bouquet anyway. Now I would have to wear Carnal Flower, because my husband loves it so. If I were choosing only for myself either Un Lys or Lys Mediterranee.

  19. As I write this, Portia, you will have sealed the deal. Congrats to you ,Jin also. The scent I wore on my Wedding Day in 1996 was Il Bacio. I am now onto my 3rd bottle with a back up. I would choose the same fragrance again.

  20. Congrats to you and Jin. What a wonderful thing for you both.

I didn’t wear any perfume on my wedding day, I think. I probably had some after shave balm on or something, but nothing I can remember. It is almost 37 years ago, so I can be forgiven I hope.

Were I to do it again, and recreate the circumstances, it would have to be a summery fragrance, because we got married in the Mallee in mid-December. I think I would go for Sevile a l’Aube, by L’Artisan Parfumeur. It has the citrusy tang of summer, but also the richness of honey, which I guess could presage a honeymoon. To top it off, its creation was the subject of a book called The Perfume Lover, which pretty much seals the deal.

  21. I’m pretty sure it was Odeur 53 for me. But the smells I remember most are of petrichor, green, and lillies–the wet earth and grass from the sudden downpour of Portland rain, then the warmth of the sun in the Shakespeare garden, and the lillies I was carrying.

I am so happy that you finally got the right that so many of us took for granted for too long. Here’s to your love and partnership.

Having missed the wedding boat but now living with someone who says i smell lovely all the time I have no idea what i would pick! Florabotanica comes to mind – or the black bottle pink writing Nariciso R. Or, maybe Amber Absolutely by Fort & Manle. or….

On my wedding day, I wore an old favourite- vintage anais anais. I still wear it and love it sooo much!
