Hi APJ,

A SOTD (Scent Of The Day) thread is a really good conversation generator. The idea is you’ll chime in through the week with whatever scent you are wearing. You don’t need to be super knowledgable, have high faluting tastes or be a published author to comment. Just tell us what fragrance you’re wearing, smelling, buying etc. and how it makes you feel and/or anything else about it that tickles your fancy.

You can also comment on everyone else choices too. It’s great to tell someone how much you love their choice, ask for more info about it, the house or perfumer. There’s someone here from around the world 24/7 and perfume people love to chat.

SOTD 20.5 – 26.5.2019

You probably won’t have time to write every scent, every spritz but whenever you feel the mood take you share your current spritz and a few things about it. Maybe you love/loathe it, want it, are excited by the notes/bottle/SA who sold it: WHATEVER! As always here at APJ, taking sides never means taking offence and everyone keeps it respectful and light, even though we can sometimes trawl the depths.

Hopefully you will come back and see if anyone has responded to your comment and you can reply to them.

Go To It Crew.

  1. It’s almost lunchtime and I’m still commando after being away for my 30th Yale reunion this weekend. I took Seville a l’Aube and Ormonde Woman with me for those festivities. Today I will probably organize my samples and see what needs skin time.

      • It’s in my cart! I may get both the EDT and EDP. I have Boucheron Jaipur Saphir from the late 90’s, and noticed it has been discontinued and more difficult to find. I feel I should stock up on Boucheron while available and affordable prices.

        Like

        • Those prices are beyond affordable… those bottles are practically free!!! I am glad I made some recent purchases in the last year because for one of them ( Gap Heaven) the price has now quadrupled! You are wise to stock up while you can.

          Like

        • Yep, go big or go home! If the price is right, then go for it. I’ve kicked myself a few times because I hesitated and lost out.

          Like

          • Agreed, I’ve lost out in the past as well and have been really analyzing the fragrances I love which will possibly be discontinued, reformulated, or not available for an affordable price.

  2. I wore a sample of DSW Colorado this morning. Swoon! And thunked my sample of Ginestet Botrytis. Thanks for the inspiration to pull out some samples.

  3. Last night I thunked a sample of Jovoy Remember Me.
Today’s Tracy Reese. Starting on June 1 my goal is to thunk 1-2 samples per day. Let’s see if I can do this 🤣

  4. I’ve been in a bit of a mood lately (guess why) so I haven’t been on here. So far this week, I’ve been sporting Montale Aoud Musk, TF Tobacco Vanille and Nasomatto Pardon. It’s cold and it’s time for the heavy scents to come out of storage.

  5. Wore my sample of Witchdoctor, by Libertine today. All woodsy, warm, and leather. Am seriously considering making FB purchase of this one. Just now I’m also trialling Different Drummer (Libertine) and Bondi Language (4160 Tues.) Not really sure about either of these. Dry down on both better than top notes. Will give them another go another night.

  6. Le Labo Ambrette 9 from the newly found sample/decant stash. I went head over heels for this a couple of years ago. Today I’m getting a disconcerting note of baby spit up. This one may get scrubbed if it doesn’t shift it’s focus.

    • Ick, one of the most disgusting notes in perfume – or anywhere else! Baby spit up is the cause of many a carpet being ripped up,

      • Big $$$$. Cuz it’s silly Le Labo. I think it’s the only LL I have tried. Fine with me. Although for some reason Bergamot 22 is fluttering around in my ‘it could be really good’, ‘you should try it’, ‘great for summer’, ‘something new’ curiousity center.

        • I tried a few…one was pretty good but didn’t need an FB cause it was a decant which got thunked and not replaced. They are pricey.

            • Yes and I will tell you that their SAs are snobs. Every single Le Labo counter I have ever approached I have been completely ignored…. happened on four separate occasions.

Probably living in a sh*thole apartment and spending whatever meager pennies they have on trying to look impressive and failing miserably. Nothing makes me more furious than stuck-up, snotty SAs. I swear I will spit on one of them some day 😡

                • It really is annoying. I guess because I don’t look like someone who will make a purchase. But you can’t always judge a book by its cover.

                  Like

                  • Whether or not you look like you would make a purchase is not the point. I went into Etiket today wearing faded jeans and a hoodie for Pete’s sake! My sister-in-law used to go into Holt Renfrew with a bag from the liquor store and her comfy, but decidedly shabby coat. And she could have bought out half of the Chanel boutique if she felt like it. The guy at Etiket was a doll. Spent an hour with me discussing his meetings with Andy Tauer and Hiram Green. He let me sniff and fool around to my heart’s content and made me samples of about a dozen scents. And that kind of sales experience makes it more likely that the consumer will spend there money there. For the record, I bought nothing. Just went home with my samples 😄

                    • Ha! So true! You never know a sale potential and shouldn’t make assumptions.

I am glad you are venturing out and testing in person and had such a pleasant interaction! Samples to bring home is icing on the cake 🍰

                • Yes, that’s the spirit, Marcella! I’d be furious if that happened to me, those jumped-up snotty shop girls/boys, as you say, probably working for a pittance but worth their weight in bad attitude. I really would stomp out like a kid with a tantrum. And a good door slam behind me( unless they’re the sliding kind). I’d certainly contact management afterwards to register a very strongly worded complaint.

  7. Wearing Hilda Soliani Untitled #7. The best sample THUNK of the year. Great citrusy opening and then… it became a headache inducing vanilla bomb that becomes stronger as minutes pass. I have to be patient and keep its company until later tonight when I get home, take another shower and get rid of the blouse that I am wearing, which got several sprays of it.

  8. On a bit of a dumping rampage today, 3 perfume bottles among lots of other stuff. There was a minuscule amount left in Dior Homme, squirt squirt. Hanae Mori, squirt squirt. And I also tried on a bit of Blossom Love. I’m rather fragrant. Anyway, rest over, back to dumping and organising.

          • I have loads of blasted tools. Thousands of them, I’d guess. Yep, it’s just awesome being married to a hoarder. I could steal a whole tool chest and they wouldn’t be missed. Do you think I should also bring some dynamite to speed up the tunnelling process? I know a tunnelling expert who could give me some hints and guidelines. Don’t want to lose my thumbs😉

            • Good idea. You check with your tunnel guy and I’ll get an explosives expert. So explosives mean less tools needed. Just bring a pick axe and maybe a shovel. Dress in black, this will be a night op. And infrared goggles. We’ll be fine 🤓

However, in your position and given what your husband has done, I doubt that I, personally, would want to remain friends. It would take all my resolve just to remain civil. It will take time, but your life will eventually regain a feeling if ordered normalcy. Take solace here, and anywhere you can find it ❤️

        • I know couples who stayed friends after divorce, but not necessarily best friends. I also have relatives who, 25 years after divorce, cannot be in the same room without creating drama.

Given how your husband has hurt your feelings, he asks a lot of you if he expects you to be friends again already. Please, please look after your own best interests in the divorce process.

  11. Cuir Beluga this morning. Went downtown for a cut and hi-lites. Since CB was long gone I decided to go sniffing at a niche perfume shop. Worked my way through Ormande Jayne, Heeley, Hiram Green, Nishane and Eau d’Italie. Quick bottle sniffs of some Olfactive Studios, Marly and HdP. Ignored Amouage (don’t know why) Ran out of steam for the rest of the lines. Came home with two goody bags of samples. I was looking for something easy to wear for summer/spring that wasn’t citrusy. I have Heeley l’Amandière on one hand and Eau d’Italie’s Easy to Love on the other. They’re both nice. Heeley being rather powdery, which pleases me and Ed’I a light, airy fruity/floral affair that is a bit soapy. Neither one seems to project much, but that’s okay for summer. Just not sure they’re worth the $$$.

    • What anout Au Lac from Eau d’ Italie? I don’t pick up much citrus in that , mostly it paints a picture of white water lilies. More floral than aquatic. But it’s big bottles, so it needs to be something you will use regularly.

      • Not heavy duty almond. I thought it was more about the almond blossom than the actual almond. Very pretty, but I don’t think it’s what you’re going for. I reckon if someone made an Eau de Marzipan, that would be more up your alley!

          • So I forgot to mention that the reason I found more samples in the basement is that I was frantically searching for Teinte de Neige because I wanted to try it again so that I could tell Crikey I like it rather than not (first time it was full on baby powder and I wasn’t getting the marzipan vibe that everyone talks about). I did find it and sprayed it on the top of my hand before mowing the lawn. I don’t know what it is with my skin and weather but in the heat it did indeed bloom into this gorgeous creamy almond. So now I finally “get” the love for this scent. You know, funny thing is Absolu Pour le Soir did the same thing. In the dead of winter it was dirty panties (raunchy!!!) and I could only wear it in the house. In the summer it morphed into a sweet honeyed amber and it was glorious. I also prefer SSS Winter Woods in the summer…same deal…sweet ambery vanilla and no smoke whatsoever.

              • Maybe? But I haven’t tried the Caswell Masey Almond yet and that might very well be the one. Honestly, I am looking for one that smells like the original Jergens skin lotion because Mr M loves that scent .. it reminds him of his childhood.
And, yes, perfectly put, Marcella, the blooming in the heat affect!

Yesterday I wore Guerlain’s LIDGE. I ran into a lady in the shop who is a bit of a perfumista, and she loved it. I’m going to nudge her towards this group; it would be nice to have a local here. Today I wore TF Oud Wood. I also had a bit of op shop luck: a new shrink-wrapped bottle of Carven Le Parfum.

Got a wedding on Saturday, which I’m travelling to Melbourne for. My niece is marrying her girlfriend and, yes, I am going to bust out my recently-acquired Derby for the occasion.

My mother’s boss would make frequent trips to Paris and would always buy perfume for the ladies in his office. She didn’t care for it and gave it to me. I loved it because an older ballet dancer whom I admired wore it all the time and always chewed mint gum to hide her cigarette breath. The combo of BaV and mint and cigarette smoke takes me back to good memories. So grateful to be able to smell it again. I have so many stories attached to so many perfumes.

I also tried the absolute which I thought was sweeter. Honestly, I like them all. The Sensuelle is a decant and if you want a sample let me know. It will get added to the pile which can sit in the basement as long as you like until you are ready for it. I haven’t tried the Eau Legere which I hear is stunning and very hard to come by. Fragrancenet sells the original and the Sensuelle for a very good price if anyone is interested. I still have a few samples of the original in the basement so I am good for now.

Unfortunately, it is not easy to find anymore, but I am always in the look for it, because I know you love it. I will check among my sea of samples to see if there is still a sample hidding somewhere, waiting for you.

But the melon has been replaced by peach. It’s an incredibly smooth and rounded affair, moreso than PdT. Could that have something to do with the use of more naturals? Does Hiram Green use strictly naturals or a bit of both? Whatever, I need to get a decant of this and see how it fares when sprayed liberally.
