Saturday Question: What 4 Would You Replace First?

Hello Fellow Fumies,

At APJ we have a Saturday Question. Everyone gets to chime in with an answer, chat with other responders and it’s a fun event each week. Taking sides never means taking offence and everyone keeps it respectful and light, even though we can sometimes trawl the depths.

The idea is you’ll see it on the weekend or chime in through the week. Hopefully you will come back regularly and see if anyone has responded to your comment and you can reply to them. The aim is to generate real conversation and connection even though we are scattered around the globe.

Over 100 responses I will draw a Secret Scent Sample Pack (from my collection)

Last Weeks Winner: JackieB

Saturday Question: What 4 Would You Replace First?

There’s been a terrible drama and your whole perfume collection has been lost. Thank goodness it was heavily insured and you will get your money back within the month to start rebuilding your collection. Nothing else was lost, hurt or broken and everyone is safe so you’re not mourning anything except your fabulous fragrance collection. You are given a certificate that allows you to rebuy any FOUR fragrances from your collection. There’s no price limit but you must have had a bottle of the fragrance in your current collection. They can come from different places and the magic of this certificate is that no matter where the fragrance is in the world it will be in your hands tomorrow morning, first thing. So you’ll not be without perfume for your daily rituals.

My Answer:

24 Faubourg by Hermès

Creamy white flowers over a vanilla base with a few extra bells and whistles to make it interesting and even more luxuriously beautiful. The perfect accompaniment to our southern Hemisphere spring.

Gentry Jockey Club by Oriza L Legrand

I’ve recently started wearing Gentry Jockey Club a lot. A lovely leather and rose combo underscored by vetiver, sandalwood and tonka. Sweet but in an understated way. It fits perfectly with cooler evenings and adds a little country glamour.

Mimosa Love by Amouage

The newest love in my life. Mimosa Love is a sheer and breathtakingly clear fragrance. The waxy and fluffy sides of wattle are both investigated and produced to perfection. Cozy enough for the cooler days but perfection with the sun shining.

Rahele by Neela Vermeire Creations

Violet, osmanthus and a patchouli/leather base. Rahele was my wedding fragrance and I love it’s interesting turns and changes from fresh, green through breathy white floral to darker, more masculine leather and patchouli.

My Saturday Question to you is:

What 4 Would You Replace First?

  1. Woweeee, thank you Ms P, I am thrilled!
So, thinking about my answer to your question.
First would be Trayee by Neela Vermeire
    Anubis from Papillon
    Cuir Beluga
And this might even be impossible, but I was sent vintage Mitsouko parfum recently and would not like to be without it!

  2. Congratulations, JackieB!
Interesting question, Portia, and out so early! You must be very organised.

Tendre Poison is the non-negotiable for me. Then perhaps Love, Chloe (as I would need powdery, soft comfort after losing all those fragrances); Charlatan (which is cheating as I only have literally a sniff of it in a plastic bag that holds an empty vial! But it is so extraordinary!); and perhaps Serge Lutens’ Fleurs d’Oranger for strength and resilience.

    • Hi Sue,
No not organised. A bloody idiot who got my timings wrong and dates mixed up. Face palming here like crazy.
Tendre Poison is such a favourite. I have two girlfriends who adore it and I grab every bottle I can to keep them supplied. Charlatan is well worth the FB purchase. I love mine.
      Portia xx

  3. Congrats to jackie B….Enjoy X
I think it would have to be 4 Guerlains. Difficult decision fer me as I love all my collection.
    Shalimar Souffle
I’m posting quickly before I change my mind XX

  4. Logical old me thinks that this breaks down readily enough into four seasonal scents:

    Spring: Mark Birley EDT
    Summer: Pierre Balmain Monsieur Balmain
    Autumn: Tom Ford Amber Absolute
    Winter: Lubin Idole

  5. This one is so very hard!! I would hope I could immediately thereafter start acquiring additional perfumes!

    Ormonde Jayne Ormonde Woman
    Chanel Paris-Deauville
    Nicolai Sacrebleu Intense
    Diptyque Philosykos

Something for each season and occasion. Each of these is one of those easy choices for me – never “too” anything.

  6. Ooh hard one. But my collection is currently housed in two countries so Im going to take does I miss when I’m in the other. Passage d’Enfer, Spanish Amber, Eau de Merveilles Bleue, Parfum Sacre.

  7. My 4:
    – Chanel No. 19 EDP
    – Guerlain Cuir Beluga
    – Puredistance Opardu
    – Chanel 28 La Pausa EDT
    – Serge Lutens Chergui
    – NVC Mohur

….. I will deny that these are my top favorites because that changes daily.

Oops. Did you say four? 🤣

  8. Drama for sure if the entire perfume collection was lost, LOL!
The first 4 to be replaced:
    vintage Chanel No 5
    Chanel Coromandel
    Chanel Bois des Isles
    original formulation Dior Hypnotic Poison

  9. What would tide me over:

    Guerlain Encens Mythique
    Mugler Surpa Floral
    VCA Bois d’Iris
    4160 Tuesdays Who Knew?

The first three would work on a daily basis and the last simply makes me happy that I have a nose.

  10. Congratulations Jackie b! Hope you’re doing your happy dance 💃🏻
The first I would need to replace are my vintage Shalimar perfumes. I might ‘forget’ that my bottles are both from the 80’s and ‘accidentally’ put it a claim for 60’s vintage. Yeah. That could happen to anyone, right?
Next up Salome because it’s so different from anything else in my collection. I’d round it out with Musc Ravageur and Cuir Beluga. They are my truest comfort perfumes and always smell just right when I wear them.

  11. I’m so traumatized by this question that I am not sure I can collect myself to answer! 🙂 Wow, tough one. What can’t I live without? I agree with the post quick before I change my mind comment. Can’t think about it. Knee jerk!
    1. Perfumer’s Workshop Tea Rose
    2. Santa Maria Novella Melograno vintage
    3. Serge Lutens Ambre Sultan
    4. Boadicea Complex
I feel EXTREME guilt at leaving my Guerlain and Caron offf the list, but how do I decide between my lovelies? I also apologize to Andy Tauer.

  12. I have no problem whatsoever naming the first three perfumes I would replace since those are my top 3 all-time favorites that haven’t lost their position ever:
    Lancôme Climat
    Ormonde Jayne Ta’if
    Anouage Ubar

Coming up with #4 is much harder because there are so many perfumes that would complete for that spot… I would say Jo Malone French Lime Blossom, but only because I want to use the “magic coupon” on the one in my runner-ups group that would be hard to replace otherwise (since it’s discounted). And right after that I’d be replacing Chanel No 19 EdT, Puredistance Antonia, Amouage Lyric, By Kilian Amber Oud and the rest of perfumes from my “never want to be without” section of my Perfume Portrait ( And for those who asked for cute cat’s pictures last week, in the end of that Portrait page there’s a collage with dozens of cat+perfumes pictures.

  13. Easy-peasy: vintage Shalimar, Mitsouko & Vol de Nuit (all colognes, and by vintage I mean at least 40 y/o), and vintage Miss Dior, edt or edc. Issara was my first choice, but vintages are getting harder to come by, so I’d surely try to replace them first.

    Congratulations, Jackie!

  14. Love questions like these though this one is not easy, 4 being the limit. As of today, my answer is:

    1. Vintage Helmut Lang Cuiron
    2. Vintage Givenchy Gentleman
    3. Shiseido Feminite du Bois
    4. Vintage Dior Homme

  15. Horrifying to contemplate, but these are the four I would replace first:

    Rahat Loukhoum
    PHI Rose de Kandahar
    Au Coeur du Désert

  16. For the bottles i own i would replace
    SJP Covet for spring
    Batucada for summer
    Fils de Dieu for autumn
    Fille en Aiguilles for winter
But i would also buy vintage Opium and Felanilla if i had two more to choose…

  17. I guess it would be 4 I would never want to be without, and would cover most situations so I’ll say:

    1. MCDI Invasion Barbare for special events
    2. D&G By Man for cool weather
    3. Creed Virgin Island Water for warm weather
    4. YSL Rive Gauche Pour Homme OR Gucci Envy for Men for everyday wear

  18. Dear Mr/Ms/Fembot/Android/Whoever.
I’m very traumatised by recent events so can you please dispatch without delay the following:
100 ml Fidji Parfum, yeah, the atomiser, that’s the one.
100 ml Magie Noire perfume oil. Yes, they DID make it in an oil. You might as well make that an atomiser while you’re at it.
Opium. It was also a 100 ml tasseled bottle. Hurry up would you!
Fragile, in the 1 litre bottle with the automatic decanting thingamebob and the 50 ml bottle to decant into. And don’t forget the bloody glitter. I’ve already told you this.
I’m soooo traumatised that I’ll be needing a consolation prize. I’ll have all the matching products for the above, please. Bath oils, lotions, shimmering powders, Hand and body washes. . . And anything else that I may have forgotten in my hour of need.
What time will you be delivering? I’m in all day.

  19. Great Saturday question Portia. I’m going with L’artisan Al Oudh, Zoologist Camel. Replacement for my newly purchased Tauer Desert Marocain. And after some serious consideration last spot goes to Alamut by Lorenzo Villoresi

  20. So, I will go with four that I could make do with for some months, so my lovely but seldom worn Tauer URC is not on the list. My four would be Guerlain AA Pamplelune, SL Five o’clock au Gingembre, Chanel les exclusifs Gardenia edp and Dior Ambre Nuit.

  21. Let’s see now..

Chanel Misia edt, I could go all winter on this one.
EDLO Tom of Finland. Tom, hurry home! Momma misses you!
L’Artisan Dzongkha. This is my thinking fragrance, my brain will suffer if I don’t have this one immediately replaced!
Annick Goutal eau de Ciel. And while you’re replacing it I’ll have a 500ml bottle please.

  22. I would approach this task as needing first to replace the workhorses of my collection, rather than the discontinued, most expensive, or hard to find. A bare bones utilitarian library would have to start with Carthusia Mediterraneo, Origins Ginger Essence, Dame New Musk, and L’Occitane Citrus Verbena.

  23. Hello gorgeous.

Apology for late reply and having disappeared from the blog. Hope all’s well with you.

Loving everyone’s lists and they all sounded so exotic.
I think my first 3 would be be consistently be:
    Dzongkha (L’Artisan Parfumeur) for calmness.
Scent (Theo Fennell) for modern vintage (will require mule from UK)
Duel (Annick Goutal) for easy going

And I’d really struggle with the fourth as it would either be:
Rien (Etat Libre d’Orange) as my first niche, or
    Journey (Amouage) for pure indulgence

    That’s all.
    XXX… Tim
