Hi there APJ Crew,

I have a great penchant for vintage frags and particularly love to find parfum or extrait versions of them. Lately I have had a few really amazing finds and wins and I’d like to share the vintage largesse with you. Below are links to APJ reviews of each fragrance and an approximate year of production, the ones without years means I can’t find the correlating bottle years and/or there is no Batch Code. The samples will not be huge but you’ll get enough to have a couple of decent wears (or one really lavish one) so you have a mental reference when you see these lovelies in stores, on eBay or blogs.

These are the good stuff but I also have had a few fakes and dummy bottles come through too. Many times the seller doesn’t know or care enough about fragrance to tell the difference, a good fake can fool the average seller & headspace technology has made it easier to copy and then other times they are bad people. I have also started to notice that they are topping up their 1/2 full bottles with perfumers alcohol, REALLY annoying because you get kind of the right scent but the open is really alcoholic, which can feel like top notes going. Maybe one in 20 that I buy are not 100% genuine.

Hey Hey Crew,

Yes, I’m cleaning out the sample drawers and YOU get to be the winner if you’re lucky. Here are a bunch of samples that I’ve tested but now live in the swap/gift pile. Some of the reasons for being there? Maybe I bought a FB, it had an issue that renders it unwearable, I liked it but have something similar, somehow I have double, I hated it, I LOVED it and completely forgot about it, I’ve moved on. So many reasons, so MANY samples. They are all used a bit but they have heaps for testing and trying. I know you’re going to love at least one thing in this pack, but hopefully a few will tickle your fancy. Whether or not they do I hope they bring someone the joy of testing new stuff that I get.

Most of these samples have been purchased from Perfume Niche, LuckyScent, Posh Peasant, My Perfume Samples and Surrender To Chance since 2010, but some are gifts or manufacturers samples. Mosat are over half full and a couple are double ups I have so full.

If they want to put an overdose of some regulated ingredient then they damn well will. That opens up a world of fabulous ingredients that the rest of the fragrant world must skimp on or ignore. As you can tell I LOVE Independent perfumery……

From Surrender To Chance: Goest Perfumes is a Los Angeles-based artisan fragrance house. Perfumer-owner Jacqueline Steele creates fully handmade fragrances with an intuitive unisex aesthetic using only pure, essential, raw quality ingredients made especially for the sensual person wanting to enhance, rather than disguise, his or her persona.
Jackal’s effect is that of your own skin, only sexier. It wears very close to the skin and can easily enhance your other fragrances. It features notes of bitter chocolate, vanilla, patchouli, toasted tobacco and sweet smoke. It is a parfum.

I bought my Jackal sample today from Surrender To Chance and I grabbed a nice big spritz decant (pricey but well worth the spend). Resinous chocolate!! The first spritz is dark chocolate with a earthy, breathy, funky patchouli. Quite a big scent to start with and I’m surprised there’s no mention of birch, there is real darkness and depth and the patchouli is old school. The vanilla tempers the darkness of both patchouli and chocolate and round the fragrance out beautifully.

Here we smell a perfumer using essential oils but completely bypassing the often murky and dank natural creations for something luminous and nuanced but with a burning dark heart. I could imagine the Goth crews going apeshit for Jackal and filling their lightless clubland with its compellingly dark lustre. To be fair I could imagine this appealing across genres to a very wide audience; from hippies to hipsters, Dads and daughters, even office appropriate if you give it half an hour to burn off.

Jackal smells amazing up close and is quiet from a few steps away, interesting how they do that, longevity is really good for a natural too.

Hi there APJ Crew,

Today I have a carry on story from Catherine de Peloux-Menage’s introduction to the Le Galion range. We were lucky enough to get to meet the head of the new Le Galion, Nicolas Chabot, while he was in Sydney and I loved the story of his finding the old fragrance house and resurrecting it with the help of it’s founders Daughter and the perfumer. Quite a beautiful and romantic beginning or re-emergence.

The weighty, gorgeous ink pot bottle. The thrill of lifting its cap like a cigarette lighter and the wonderful joy of spritzing liberally. Life doesn’t get much better than this…….

Impossible Iris by Ramon Monegal

Fragrantica gives these featured accords in one line:
Iris, mimosa, raspberry, ylang-ylang, jasmine, Virginian cedar

I love to soft wattle, cardboard, bread and sweet floral opening. Impossible Iris smells like no other iris fragrance to me. It smells a little leathery and lightly fruity, the mimosa (wattle in Australia) is clean and pretty and all the fatty elements of the white flowers are shaved off. Impossible Iris is like a calm space in the mad world we live in. Imagine being in a cool pool on the second floor of a building surrounded by skyscrapers, freeways, shoppers and noise. You go underwater and suddenly you are in an oasis of serenity, just you, your heartbeat, the cool water lapping and the play of sunlight above and around you.

Refreshing, uplifting and calming. What a perfect warm day scent. I love how through the heart the berry gives Impossible Iris a little hint of sweetness, a very nice (not overly sugared or sweet) addition like opening an expensive lollipop.

I get soft but persistent longevity from Impossible Iris and after the first hour I get little huffs of reminder as I go about my day but you will never skunk anyone even if you drench yourself. A one hour respritz gives it extra fullness and lifespan.

It is blended only with the finest cedar, in the presence of the exotic ylang-ylang flower, with traces of violet and jasmine, fleshing out its full glamour so that it may become the most attractive perfume in the world
