Mackie by Bob Mackie

Hey everyone,

Photo from Unknown Source

Let’s go down memory lane together today. I remember as a kid sitting around with Mum & Dad watching the Sonny and Cher show. It was a hugely popular weekly musical/comedy TV show with some seriously special guests that looked largely thrown together in an afternoon by a bunch of totally un-gifted high school students. At the time, there was nothing to compare it to in suburban Australia, even living in Sydney. We would laugh at Cher’s deadpan, Sonny’s bad Dad jokes and completely over the top delivery, the terrible skits and the fun they all seemed to be having. It was a time of peace and laughter that we could all share. The real stand out star of the show though were the incredible Bob Mackie costumes. Every week there would be something more fabulous, gala, showstopping than last. Of course Cher was the perfect clothes horse then as now and would wear these sometimes ridiculously extravagant creations as if she was in jeans and t-shirt down the local shops.

It wasn’t just Cher that Bob Mackie designed for though. Every star had at least one Bob Mackie gown in her wardrobe, from uber glam to sophisticated and elegant, to Las Vegas showgirl. He was the king of amazing.

Then Bob Mackie decided to go with the designer flow and introduce fragrance.

According to Fragrantica; An Oriental Floral fragrance for women. Mackie was launched in 1991.
Top notes are pineapple, raspberry and peach
Middle notes are tuberose, orange blossom, narcissus, jasmine, ylang-ylang and rose
Base notes are sandalwood, amber, patchouli, musk and vetiver

My question to you all is, HAS THIS BEEN REFORMULATED?

An aqueous, light, fresh scent. I was expecting to have to spray this and walk through the mist because it was going to be a blockbuster. If this is how it smelled in 1991 was it not a ground breaking fragrance? Cartier Declaration wasn’t released till 1998 and I thought that it was the original aqueous fragrance? Does anyone know because I am baffled. What I’m smelling from a bottle bought from a reputable online store is pretty much the ubiquitous pastel water that we are being given currently instead of perfume. WTF?

Don’t get me wrong this is pretty and very wearable, and I’m over reacting because I was expecting something different. I could see this being a go to daywear scent, weekends, cinema and dinners. It doesn’t scream, it blends and melds. Now that I’ve given myself a decent spritz there is charm and intrigue.  I am surprised though that this is what Bob Mackie chooses as his signature scent for women.

Thanks for coming along on my fragrant carpet ride. Underneath is a super Bob Mackie retrospective video. You’ll LOVE it.

Cuir Pleine Fleur, Knize Ten; Cher Uninhibited LIVE Video Sniff; Reviews

Hey all,

It’s Easter Sunday and I was LAZY, LAZY, LAZY!! Lolled around in bed this morning, had brunch and basically let the world pass me by till it was time to put my Blogging and Trivia hats on.

While I was having my lovely lazy day I thought I’d try a couple of new to me scents from the leather family. Leather is my favourite note in a fragrance, I love the feeling that it gives me.

Photo Stolen from BridlewoodEquestrian

From my childhood horses and tack, leather driving gloves that my Dad had, leather golfing gloves that my Mum had, her new handbags or shoes, the formative years provided that super delicious scent of new leather couches and car interiors, my first ever, and only, leather jacket (in exquisitely soft and subtle, almost rubbery, sheep hide that was stolen from my car and I have not been able to bring myself to replace because I loved it so much and nothing will ever feel the same),

getting my groove on with sexy hairy chested muscle men in leather partywear,

nowadays the subtle but delicious fragrance of new boots, belts, bags, the list goes on and on.

KNIZE TEN by KNIZE

Released all the way back in 1924 Knize (you pronounce it kah-neesh-ah) Ten’s 90th birthday is around the corner. This is a “Perfumes the A-Z Guide” by Luca Turin and Tania Sanchez 5 star worthy offering. OH YES IT IS! This is exactly how I like to smell from top to bottom. It is a flowery, woody, leather, it has grunt, smells like a very expensive barber shop fragrance and lasts for ages, gradually warming itself on your skin till you wish it was on someone else so you could tell them how frigging delicious they smell and give them a great big snog, before you tear their clothes off and…

Sorry, I had to go and have a cup of tea. Twinings’ Australian Afternoon to calm myself.

I put this on my right arm this morning and have given my neck a crick bending in to whiffle it so often. Cor blimey! I really like this.

Opening with greens, citrus and herbs Knize Ten quickly moves away to the flowers, woods, musk, moss and leather for me, warming up with amber and an almost caramel flavoured vanilla as it progresses over hours and hours. I have reapplied to write to you tonight at 9pm Australian EST but could still have written from my arm because this yummy scent was still extant as a warm and sexy fragrance, not loud but discernibly not me. This could be the bulletproof fragrance for me. The one that helps stiffen your spine on those cowardly lion days.

You want the notes, accords and real people reviews? Fragrantica is your spot. Want to know a lot about how it is? Reviews that I read from YesterdaysPerfume and NowSmellThis filled in what I have left out. If you want to buy it LuckyScent will have it back in mid April.

CUIR PLEINE FLEUR by JAMES HEELEY

When I first sprayed Cuir Pleine Fleur it was musty morning wake up and ooh I smelled a leather and citrus cocktail, spiky and abrasive, yummy. I had enormously high hopes for a scruffy but refined journey through a magical wonderland. But no. I felt that the scent left me in about an hour except for this almost nothing, barely there memory of Muscs Koublai Khan-ishness that I tried the other day. Like scent resonance, as if the ultimate dry down of it had been reached a few days later, to near invisibility in this other fragrance.

Don’t get me wrong, this scent IS delicious. It is also interesting. Like new expensive leather gloves left overnight in a freshly turned and fertilised garden bed featuring an orange tree and fragrant shrubs in full bloom, maybe down the back near the old incinerator. For an hour. Then it becomes a skin scent. Way too quiet for me and my unresponsive nose.

Something that should be noted though is TSO Jin thought Cuir Pleine Fleur was the winner out of todays 2 scents. Funny isn’t it? Oh well, if he likes it so much, he can buy it.

If he wanted to he could buy it at LuckyScent where there is also a beautiful description of the fragrance, better than I can give you and PerfumeNiche, where I got my samples for today, has a lovely story about first sniffing Cuir Pleine Fleur in James Heeley’s studio and review.

UNINHIBITED by CHER

A couple of weeks ago I got my hands on a very special vintage coffret of Uninhibited by Cher. My friend David/Margeaux (who just happens to be Cher’s greatest ever fan) and I decided to do a video presentation of it, I hope you enjoy watching as much as we enjoyed making it for you. Video shot and edited by my BFF Kath and cyber-tech work done by TSO Jin.

The Cher Uninhibited fragrance was lovely but I think the Body Lotion had turned due to air, or bottle, exposure because it smelled like plastic after 20 min’s and was IMPOSSIBLE to get off my skin.

Thanks for wandering around inside my fragrant thoughts today, see you tomorrow for Evie C’s update!

Charity, GIVEAWAY, Cher

Hiya all,

Something that really caught my attention recently was the Smell Good, Do Good Campaign on Arielle’s Scents of Self site. Didn’t hear about it? It’s still going and there are some great bargains to be had. Some discontinued gems, lovely albatrosses that just didn’t get worn and even some delicious pieces that perfumers have donated to raise much needed money for Refuge. I went on and got a couple of bargains myself and am MIGHTY pleased. They wouldn’t even let me pay for postage!!

Here’s what they said at Scents of Self

Welcome to the Smell Good, Do Good perfume sale! Every cent of the selling price of these perfumes will go to Refuge, a British domestic violence charity that provides safe houses for women and children escaping domestic violence.

My Photo

I picked up an Aftelier Perfumes Apricot and Lemon Candle in a Tin, Royal Apothic City of Angels and L’Artisan Perfumer L’Eau d’Ambre. Pretty good stuff eh!

You should mosey on down and have a little look see yourself. Maybe the one perfume you’ve wanted for AGES is there, cheap, no postage!!

Last night a dear friend David (Margeaux), my best friend (Kath) and I got together for a special moment. Margeaux has been a long time fan and friend of the amazing singer, Oscar winning actress, clothes horse and general superstar Cher. He followed her farewell tour around the world and saw her do it about a million times. eventually they mat and his home is a shrine to the mega star. Huge autographed photos. the Barbie doll collection, every moment of video, celluloid or vinyl ever to have had Cher grace it is in his possession. Trolling among the fragrance distributors, bargain sites and uber sought after pieces online stores, as I do each day, I happened upon a rare and gorgeous must have that Margeaux did not yet have. A brand new, unopened, vintage coffret of Cher Uninhibited! with a 100ml bottle of body lotion and a 10ml bottle of fragrance EDT. Quell SURPRISE!! it was launched back in November 1987, and it’s a huge aldehydic floral with a dirty vanilla dry down that takes a while to arrive. Kath videoed the opening ceremony and our reactions to this awesome fragrance. WAIT TILL YOU SEE IT! It’s currently in post production and we should have it up over the weekend. CAMPERAMA!! Gay squared!

I have a confession to make, a couple actually. In my celebuscent collection I have 3 favourites that get trotted out quite regularly, there are more but these are the 3 that I reach for often. They are,

Photo stolen from Fragrantica

Sarah Jessica Parker Lovely; when I first tried this I thought it was an absolute pile of shit, couldn’t understand what people saw in it and frankly wanted to give good old SJP a brick in the face hello. Then one day I saw it for a ridiculously knock down price, like they were practically paying people to take it, respritz…. love, Love, LOVE!! weird right? Now I adore the stuff and would be sad to not have it in my fragrance wardrobe.

Photo stolen from Fragrantica

Queen Latifah Queen; when I saw the name, the celeb and the bottle I didn’t care what it smelled like, I just wanted to have it. I love Queen Latifah, she is hot and cool, smart and sassy and not afraid to be a solid girl and GORGEOUS! If she put out a fragrance I was going to trust that she’d not sucker punch me. and she came through. I love it. Cheap, cheerful, lasts forever, smells great and nobody else has it around here. PERFECT!

Jessica Simpson Fancy Nights; please let me stay at the party. I like being a perfumista. You all can say and think what you like but this fragrance rocks. On my skin it’s like the dirty bitch, slutty sister of Shalimar, my all time favourite perfume, all dressed up and ready to break hearts. Jessica Simpson has some seriously good people around her.

This will be a regular Thursday thing hopefully, but being our 13th day of daily blogging and already we are set to reach 1000 visitors we will go a little CRAZY!!! Yeah?
