Silences by Jacomo 1978

Hi guys!

I recently saw a basenotes link for fragrances to be discontinued this year, and Silences is one of them. I’m not astonished or outraged, there’s no hissy fit lurking about nor rants about IFRA. I feel grief.

Of all the fragrances I own, Silences is THE ONE. I can’t say it’s the most beautiful, but to me it is a friend and a lover who embraces me at my core and allows me to fully inhabit my own skin and self. There are a lot of fans out there and many reviews, but what they describe is not at all my experience. Thus it feels quite singular in the way it belongs to me. It is a relationship.

Fragrantica gives these featured accords:
Top: Orange blossom, galbanum, bergamot, lemon, green notes, cassia
Heart: Iris, jasmine, narcissus, hyacinth, rose, lily-of-the-valley
Base: Vetiver, musk, sandalwood, oakmoss, cedar, ambrette (musk mallow)

Like all the best things in life, Silences is difficult to describe. It transcends description in the way that meaningful dreams do. In this way, it is both corporeal and yet other-worldly. It shimmers on the edges. When I look at the notes listed, many of my favorites are there. But to be honest, if I didn’t cheat and read them, I would never be able to tell you what they are when I smell Silences. I simply can’t pick them out at all. So, I can only offer you my own personal sensations, impressions.

Silences is usually described as being intensely green, a floral chypre or a green floral. When I think of green, I actually think of very bright, brash scents. Cut grass, clover. If I had to pick an epitome, it would be either vintage Lauren or Aftelier’s Trefle Pur. Silences may be a chypre, but I feel it does not have that density. Standing apart from those, Silences is pigeon-coloured. Muted dove grey, flashes of green and mauve iridescence. Weeping willows, fog, silvered trees in a mist viewed wistfully from a window. The sound of wind as it ripples through spring leaves in anticipation of rain, a slight hiss and sigh, the leaves gracefully dancing with anticipation. The dense somber sense of thunder in the distance.

It is gentle, reflective, introspective and yet there is a subterranean shadow, a bruise. Walking alone through a carefully constructed maze at Sissinghurst, a hint of danger and excitement implicit. Beyond the maze, the quiet white gardens thrive but do not beckon. Silences is a spector, bestowing grace as a nimbus, an enigmatic presence that you can sense but cannot fully know. It is enigmatic. At times it is a Mary Cassatt painting of an all-embracing mother, and at others it is a minotaur.

Silences has beguiling floral notes with wisps of glowering deep forest shaded green on a moonlit, austere base. It does not sparkle or shine, but shape-shifts from inviting to threatening. A fairy tale and a dream that resonates and invites you to explore what is on the surface and what lies beneath. You may carry this secret with you wherever you go.

Silences is my Goldilocks fragrance. Do you have one? And on a more practical note (heaven forbid!) what would you do if you discovered your Goldilocks fragrance was to be discontinued?

Out With The Old AND Out With The New!

Dear APJ,

I have been collecting and hoarding fragrances, jewelry, shoes, you name it for many years. While sorting through this vast inventory of neglected treasures I’ve come to realize that certain recurring patterns of behavior have contributed a lot to the creation of my monster stash. I can’t help but wonder if you deal with similar issues. For example:

Have you ever succumbed to the hype surrounding a new fragrance, drained your sample to the dregs, purchased the bottle and then relegated it (after a cursory sniff) to your perfume storage where it most likely will never be seen or smelled again? No? You have nothing new and abandoned at your house? OK.

Then what about this? One night you find yourself trolling for fragrance online when you happen to see an old flame on sale for a song! You snap her up but when she arrives you realize you have outgrown your vintage love. Yet another perfume is relegated to the cool, dark cupboards in the lower floor.

Here is a third scenario: You are digging around in those cool, dark cupboards searching for a back up for the current favorite that is running low. You can’t find it anywhere. OMG! In a panic you order another only to realize that there are at least two extra 100ml bottles waiting in the wings? Yes?

BTW, I really have fun recycling my perfumes through these give-aways. The extent of my trove was causing me considerable concern until a friend, in the same fix, advised me to think of our “stuff” not as an embarrassment but as an opportunity to recycle, repurpose and redistribute our treasures. Soon we will be offering all kinds of goodies for sale at our online shop Random Acts of Recycling<<JUMP. And yes, that was a shameless plug!

Happy Holidays!!

Out With The Old AND Out With The New – A Give-Away

Fragrance Republic 01/02, Jacomo Silences, and Nicole Miller Frenzy

Today I will be giving away three fragrances. One is “New and Abandoned”, another “Old and Unloved” and the third perfume is an “Accidental Extra”.

The “New and Abandoned”

FR! 01:No02

Fragrance Republic 01/02 Vapeur de Tubereuse by Julie Masse, 2013.

15 ml EdT, new.

Listed notes: Rose Absolute, Tuberose Absolute, Cocoa Resinoide.

The perfumer, Julie Masse, tells us that she “…wanted to create a vaporous, almost ethereal tuberose…”. 01/02 is just that – light, ethereal, vaporous and perhaps a bit vapid. I always like my tuberose bombastic, carnal and indolic! What was I thinking when I ordered this one? It is simply not for me (but it may be for you)!

Now for the “Old and Unloved”

Jacomo Silences

Jacomo Silences by Gerard Goupy and Jean Claude-Niel, 1978.

30 ml vintage EdT, no box.

Listed notes: Orange blossom, galbanum, bergamot, lemon, green notes, cassia, iris, jasmine, narcissus, hyacinth, rose, lily of the valley, vetiver, musk, sandalwood, oakmoss, cedar, ambrette.

I am wearing Silences right now so I suppose I still love her a little bit! However, when it comes to green vintage scents I have always preferred Niki de Saint Phalle.

And lastly the “Accidental Extra”

Nicole Miller Frenzy

Nicole Miller Frenzy by Caroline Sabas, 2009.

15 ml new in box.

Listed notes: Cassis, orange, aldehydes, gardenia, ylang ylang, orange blossom, violet leaf, black patchouli, oakmoss, cedar wood, amber.

I maintain a serious stockpile of this deeply discounted (and discontinued?) fragrance. From my perspective Frenzy is the very best of the ubiquitous fruit-choulies. It is quite dry, though, and almost “unisex”. Perhaps it would be better to describe it as a fresh, modern chypre?

Silences by Gerard Goupy and Jean-Claude Niel for Jacomo 1978

Hi Ho Fellow Funies,

My mate Dionne from BOTOblog sent me a frag. care package recently. I have often wondered about a fragrance that many bloggers name as their go to green and when offered a sample I jumped at the chance.

Silences by Jacomo 1978

Photo Stolen Fragrantica

Fragrantica gives these featured accords:
Top: Orange blossom, galbanum, bergamot, lemon, green notes, cassia
Heart: Iris, jasmine, narcissus, hyacinth, rose, lily-of-the-valley
Base: Vetiver, musk, sandalwood, oakmoss, cedar, ambrette (musk mallow).

WOW! So this is nothing like the notes had me expecting, I had something deeply seductive in my mind but here I get a bitter sweet greenness, a bell pepper-ish green where I can’t find the berries or orange blossom. Once the flowers float in I find the fragrance loses about 2/3 of its power and sits very prettily, powdery and still a little green. A cool, waxy bouquet that makes CHANEL 19 look like an eager gauche slapper it is so restrained.

The name is completely indicative of the fragrance, it’s like I have been allowed a moment to breathe the cool air of memory, the spaces in between the notes and the heartbeats between coming and gone. I read mainly earthy, slightly salty vetiver towards the 3 hour point, it is soft and the fragrance still scintillates on my skin with florals floating over and woodsy musks just out of smellovision holding the whole fragrance up. For some reason I had in my head a sister to Nikki de Saint Phalle that other green goddess that I love but it is way more CHANEL 19 but softer, easier to wear, more floral and sweet, not nearly as up front about its coolness. Though my Chanel 19 is a vintage parfum and I am presuming the Silences is more modern so apples and oranges.

It’s now the morning after wearing Silences for the 3rd time and I am still fragrant. I think the vetiver, hyacinth and galbanum are still pumping their song, it is an awkward salty green that is a bit naughty but that could just be me. CHANEL 19 has completely left my skin though and it was sprayed nearly an hour after for comparison.

What a marvelous warm rainy weather pick this has been, it fits perfectly with time and place and at these ridiculous prices is going on the must have list. Thanks Dionne for an affordable lemming. XXXOX
