3. Hi Azar! No need to enter me, but I wanted to throw in a few words on this scent. First, I love it, although I seldom wear it, and the deep red “poisoned apple” bottle is among my favorites. Second, when I do wear it I am always fascinated by how its pronounced jasmine and vanilla and fruit notes add up to anything but a standard “fruity jasnilla.” Third, I would swear that I smell star anise in it, just like the spice that I buy in exquisite flower-shaped seed heads for my red-cooked Chinese stews.
   Your review got me to put it on again, and then I remembered that the reason I don’t wear it much is that, on me at least, it has killer sillage. I can leave a room in it and, when I return ten minutes later, smell my own scent-trail. Not office-appropriate by a long shot. But what a lovely scent to put on when I get home in the evening

     “Fruity Jasnilla” – It really IS that. I don’t get the star anise, though, but I will smell for it again. (Those star shaped, fragrant pods and the seeds within are some of Gomez the parrot’s favorite treats.)
     Regarding the sillage: Yesterday afternoon B and I were sitting out on the lawn under one of the big maples (admiring the progress of the new greenhouse). A light breeze came up. B commented that he could smell my perfume – HP applied 6 hours before! I was about ten feet from him! Outside, at ten feet after 6 hours is indeed monster sillage. Definitely not office appropriate! 4. WOW! Azar I remember all the excitement of the whole Poison line so clearly and each new flanker coming out. Some of the people afraid of the original were struck by one or more of the ensuing cavalcade of releases.

     Yes, those were heavy duty and heady days. Everything seemed to be big and IN YOUR FACE! I can’t remember anything that was shy. If there were any shrinking violets they were immediately overcome. Did you like any of the Poisions?

5. I have never tried this one and would like to. I remember Poison vividly. Not very fondly I have to say!
   Strangely enough I found a 20 year old bottle of Red by Giorgio today and put a tentative spray on my wrists. Hm…a bit loud but all the better for a long period of absence.

   • Hi there Patty Pong! I pulled out my pretty old purple bottle of Poison when I was writing up this post. The first day I tried it I had already sprayed copious amounts of Hypnotic. The first version was lost to the flanker. I tried it again after the Hypnotic had cleared out (it took a couple of days). I really think that the purple Poison was one of the most original/cutting edge fragrances of the period and still works today. Thank you so much for dropping by and you are IN!

7. I have the original Hypnotic Poison, so please don’t enter me for the draw – I just wanted to say that your description is spot on! As usual, the latest version is not too good. You have inspired me to go and spritz myself thoroughly in its sweet loveliness – I am afraid I love big sillage (but there’s only the two cats and me here at the moment, so I am not worrying!!).

     I love big sillage too! My problem with Hypnotic Poison is that when I use it I have little regard for the sensibilities of others. I just spray it on multiple times per day! It seems so yummy to me that I can’t imagine why anyone would object! BTW, have you tried any of the other Poisons?

     • The only other Poison I ever tried was the original, when it first launched. I am afraid to say I hated it, and when my boss kindly gave me a bottle for Christmas, I quickly swapped it for something else. But now I reckon I would probably like it!

     Thank you for joining the draw! You are IN! When you get your new bottle make sure it is an older one. I believe Hypnotic was seriously reformulated around 2008 0r 2009. I haven’t tried the new version but have heard it is quite different.

10. An oldie that I recently rediscovered was D&G pour homme. It was a favorite of mine in my teens and although it wouldn’t hold a “fave” spot currently, I enjoy wearing it as it triggers memories from simpler days. It had been collecting dust on my shelf and I decided to revisit it. Come to think of it, I should still have a shower gel and aftershave lying around somewhere…

    Hypnotic Poison has been one that I’ve been wanting to smell for a while, I’ve read all sorts of impressions that from from “this is weird!” to “this is lovely!” and that is one of the aspects to this fragrance that attracts me along with the heart notes, which tick all of my boxes. 🙂

      Yes, the best things about many oldies are the memories they carry with them! Hypnotic Poison, though, works for me right now, almost like something new. No weird vibes or effects, just enticing, almost edible, like some sort of beautiful (but poisonous) red berry. I hear the reformulation is quite different from the original, but not in a bad way.

11. Dior and Poison will ALWAYS be classics.
    Although I’ve not had a personal experience with Poison, I have fallen in love with Miss Dior – I remember it as a child on my grandmother (and must admit I wasnt a big fan) but since rediscovering it as an adult Im in love.
    A little bit of trivia I discovered was the scent has actually been altered to move with the times.

13. I’m always discovering oldies, I don’t think I’m ever re-discovering them though. Not much of a background there.
    My mom used to wear Opium, I guess re-smelling vtg Opium might count.
    Love vtg Poison, got a partial for my Linda. Really like Hypnotic too. Not smelt the earlier version.

15. I follow you on bloglovin and wish I found you earlier. I love my perfume. I would wear poison as a teenager started with the fake one that stained my arm but smelt devine then progressed to the real Bobby McGee. It wasn’t till I was at a nightclub in my late twenties when my nose reconized a familiar smell. With it came some great memories. The next day I bought a bottle. I never not have a bottle now plus Pure poisin is my favourite. I always have two bottles. I go to bed with perfume on. Probably why I have sweet dreams

16. No need to enter me. I love Poison. I spent many years in a cloud of the stuff. I liked the flankers but never fell head over heels for any of them even though they were all really good.

      Poison really was a ground breaking fragrance! Nothing like it before or since. Another thing I like about the vintage Poison is the beautiful glass bottle with the glass stopper (the EDT splash). My daughter convinced me to buy my first bottle of Poison right after it “debuted”. I have never regretted it. Later she gave me a gift set of miniatures, including Poison, Dune, Tendre Poison and Miss Dior. (That girl has great taste in fragrance.)

17. Hi Azar! I still have some of the vintage Opium from your good self, and I keep thinking about putting it on now it’s winter here. It’s like having a purring panther lurking in the cupboard. I wish I had an Event to wear it to because that’s what it deserves! I’m an email follower. 🙂

      Right now it is way too hot here for those big, spicy orientals but I find that I can still use Hypnotic Poison, despite the monster sillage.

19. The only version of Poison I remember smelling is Midnight Poison, which is a favorite of a good friend. I myself found the patchouli in the beginning to be a little bit too much! This sounds like it might be a little bit more up my alley 🙂 I follow by email.

      I used to love all things patchouli (and still do) but lately I think I’ve developed a “sensitivity” to it! Despite that, I still want to try Midnight Poison.
      Hypnotic doesn’t have that edgy, earthy and dark patchouli. I do imagine you WOULD like it better than the Midnight! Thank you for joining the draw, Nemo! You are so IN!

20. So far the only “oldie” I discovered is Shalimar.
    And well, Iris Gris but that one was better left in the past as you cannot get it anymore and I was lucky enough to get a sample to try.
    I’m optimistic though about Dawn’s take on it…

      Yes, it can be very sad when a favorite is discontinued. I have to admit that I have stockpiled (I don’t like to call it “hoarding”) limited editions from several indies only to have them re-issued! HA! I console myself by calling these back-up bottles “first editions”.

21. Hi Azar, would be lovely to smell the original HP! I’ve smelled the current version but don’t own it, and I’ve always thought it must be pretty good as far as reformulations go, compared to some others. Almost bought it one time, but happened to stumble across Midnight Poison, and couldn’t pass up dark and dirty roses.

23. Email, Bloglovin and Twitter I fell in love with Christian Dior Poison in my teenage years. They say perfume stays with you for life, and I admit I love it just as much as I did when I first put it on, Christian Dior just keeps getting better, Hypnotic Poison gets me compliments wherever I go!

      It is interesting to me how many fell for Poison when they were in their teens! I was in my mid thirties when the original Poison first came out. It seemed perfect for my age then and it works even today. For me there is no “youngish vibe” or “old lady” scent with the first Poison or with Hypnotic. Both are timeless fragrances. I agree (for the most part) that Dior does keep getting better and does a great job (one exception) with the reformulations I’ve tried. Thank you for joining this draw! You are so IN!

    I tried a more modern HP sometime last year when I was starting out on my perfume journey. I also got a lot of vanilla, with a nice nutty almond and caraway tinge that made it so different from all the other vanillas I’ve tried. It’s definitely a unique scent.

27. I have only tried the current Hypnotic Poison and I absolutely love it! I don’t normally go for these sweet, gourmand-type perfumes but I fell for HP. That delicious almond, vanilla and jasmine. Dark and tempting. I hope I can try the vintage version. Supposedly it’s even richer and louder than the current one. That can only be a good thing in my book 🙂

    I recently rediscovered my first ever bottle of Poison. It was my first ever ‘real’ perfume I ever treated myself to and have never been able to finish it all. It hold so many memories both good and bad but I still love it and every now and then I still use it.
