Ellis Faas was born and raised in the Netherlands. She gave up professional photography to concentrate on her obsession and infatuation with make-up. Her biography makes for fascinating reading on http://www.ellisfaas.com.
As I wrote “Lipstick, Perfume and Pop Heroes: A True Story” I had no idea I would be back a year later having discovered the perfect red from a cosmetic house in Amsterdam, setting of the original post. Red lipstick junkies are on permanent lookout for new reds. How many times do we come home with a new red to find out that it looks pretty much the same as the others?
Ellis Faas Cosmetics
Red Lipsticks for One & All
I stumbled across Ellis Faas Cosmetics in Milan at the Esxence. (I have since found out that a number of my friends do know of the company but I was not familiar with it.) Immediately drawn to the red lipstick on the display, I grabbed one to try. Angelique, representing Ellis Faas explained to me why their Ellis Reds signature colour is different. The red is based on the natural colour of blood she informed me. Theory being that it will then match everyone´s skin colour. We all have the same blood, right? I grabbed a couple of samples to take home.
What can I say? The colour is absolutely fabulous. I squeezed a couple of drops out of the sample onto my
daughter´s hand and asked what she thought of it. “It looks like blood.” she said. Clearly we are onto a winnner here.
There are three textures of the Ellis Red. Creamy Lips, which has pretty much the feel of a normal lipstick. Milky Lips, which has a much lighter texture and is more of a lip stain. (This is what I have as samples and it needs to be applied sparingly preferably with a lip brush.) Great if you don´t care for the feel of lipstick on your lips. And the Glazed Lips, a highly pigmented, but non-sticky gloss. I have all three and cannot recommend them highly enough. Anyone who believes that red is not for them should give the Ellis Red a try.
The packaging is very sleek and stylish.. I was however warned to be careful of too much product coming out of the tube and then possibly drying out. It works by turning in clicks the bottom of the silver tube. I really took time with that and did it very slowly, patiently waiting for the product to squeeze out onto the brush or sponge applicator. It took me ten minutes and about thirty small clicks. I dispense only enough product for an application and then put the lid back on. Next time I go to use it I give it couple of clicks again and apply. Works just fine. If you do it impatiently you will end up with a ton of product though so be aware.
How stunning is the Ellis Red red? Stunning enough that I asked the company to send me some samples so that I could share them with you. I have ten x 2 samples of the Ellis Red Milky Lips to give away below. Many thanks to Ellis Faas Cosmetics in beautiful Amsterdam.
Red will change your life you know?

Unlike you Val, I don’t have the fabulous lips required for red lipstick. I wish If I did I’d order the Eliis Fass Red like a shot. It really is unique. How interesting to learn about the blood concept behind it. It actually works!

Thanks for your interesting post Val.I love red and wear it daily. For the past ten years my spectacles have been 50 per cent red. Red lipstick needs careful application, not a rushed swipe, but it imbues confidence. A bit like shoes (and yes, I own red pairs): one can never have too many beautiful shoes. I follow APJ via email.

Hi Val,
Loved this post! But DNEM as I prefer thick lipsticks. The “creamy” version is probably what I would go for. The colors on the site look great.
I have one red lipstick that I love and so many that just don’t work for me. “Tomato” and is (was) from a cheap stenciled brand in a chunky pencil that is no longer available…

Red lipstick junkie 4eva!!! I’m always on the search for the ‘perfect’ blue based red! But we all know there is no such thing as perfect but let’s just go along with it to make me feel better 😉
Nars dragon girl, Mac ruby woo, Tom ford cherry lush, Chanel, Revlon and l’oreal, hourglass icon.. Oh my search is ongoing! 😀 funny enough though I haven’t tried any of Ellis faas line that Mecca sells. But a red lip inspired by blood.. Ohhh sounds right up my alley! 🙂
Thanks for making this giveaway available for us 🙂

I can now manage red lipstick if it is a warm red stain / worn off gloss OR a blend of red and a nude on top. Must avoid cool reds at all costs. Also, with thin lips and being of a certain age, it is very easy for me to pull Cruella de Vil. I am not even sure the colour of my own blood suits me, haha. Maybe that is why I called it ‘green stuff’ as a kid. No, actually, it was because I was scared spitless of *blood*.
That all said, I remain ever curious about this nonpareil of lippies, the perfect red.
I follow by looking in my own blog sidebar – APJ comes to the top every time someone posts. 😉

I’ve heard only praise about Ellis Faas cosmetics but I was not able to try anything out so far. Red lipstick always looks glamorous to me so I wear it only when I feel glamorous, which means not too often but I always have one red lipstick in stock. I prefer the glossy versions and I’d love to try the ones you write about. Thanks for the opportunity.

I follow you on Bloglovin’ and by email. I love red lipstick and am always looking for another one to become the perfect one. Too many of my favorite reds have been discontinued. Why a cosmetic company would discontinue a red lipstick is beyond me.

Hi Val – since i have decided to go down the ‘au natural’ grey hair look i am struggling to find the right ‘red’ lipstick and you wouldn’t believe how many lipsticks i have brought home to try – most of them are not ‘just right’ so i have been melting and mixing! I’ve always admired your beautiful lipstick colour and must ask what it is? Ellis Faas red lips look really chique – would love to try this one out. cheers for the chance.

I definitely qualify as a red lipstick junkie – always searching for that even-more-perfect shade. I’m hopeless at doing eye makeup, blush, etc, so it’s also a great way to look sort of put together without doing much. Plus without colour on my lips I look a bit cadaverous. (Really. I’m not kidding) 🙂
Thanks so much for the draw; I follow by email.
