Hi APJ,

A SOTD (Scent Of The Day) thread is a really good conversation generator. The idea is you’ll chime in through the week with whatever scent you are wearing. You don’t need to be super knowledgable, have high faluting tastes or be a published author to comment. Just tell us what fragrance you’re wearing, smelling, buying etc. and how it makes you feel and/or anything else about it that tickles your fancy.

You can also comment on everyone else choices too. It’s great to tell someone how much you love their choice, ask for more info about it, the house or perfumer. There’s someone here from around the world 24/7 and perfume people love to chat.

SOTD 9 – 15 July 2018

You probably won’t have time to write every scent, every spritz but whenever you feel the mood take you share your current spritz and a few things about it. Maybe you love/loathe it, want it, are excited by the notes/bottle/SA who sold it: WHATEVER! As always here at APJ, taking sides never means taking offence and everyone keeps it respectful and light, even though we can sometimes trawl the depths.

Hopefully you will come back and see if anyone has responded to your comment and you can reply to them.

Go To It Crew.

  1. My SOTD is Le Cri De La Lumiere from Parfum D’Empire. It is indeed a luminous veil of rose and iris with a radiant dose of ambrette. It is glorious and sunny. I love most of PdE’s line, especially Tabac Tabou. I do, however miss the older, plainer, larger, cheaper bottles. I’m not a fan of paying for luxe packaging. I can’t wear packaging and, at my age, no one sees my boudoir.😂 Cheers!

  2. I love Cuir Amethyst, must remember to revisit. Today was Cuir for me too, Cuir Beluga and just now some Trayee on my hair before bed.

  3. Today I wore Ann Gerard Cuir Nacre. I don’t know what’s going on with this one because I can barely smell it. Other people report the sillage is very weak but I imagine it must be an anosmia issue as well, which is a shame because I love a soft suede.
After a while of that I sprayed some Eau des Missions over the top. Yum.

  4. Lashings of SMN Melograno…wore it last night and the middle Marzipan remarked on how good I smelled…there is a high likelihood that she will start using it as well which means the bottle will surely be done before summer’s end.

  5. Woke up too early this morning, so decided to spray some soothing perfume and try to go back to sleep. NV Niral was the easiest sample to find. A pretty, calm perfume which still isn’t on my FB-list of perfumes to buy.I like it, don’t love it: I still haven’t tried Bombay Bling which I sense may fill a gap in my collection, so hope to find “my” NV perfume in the future.

Clouds and summer rain today, more like normal summer than the temperatures we have had lately. Forgot to put on perfume during the day, but will spray on some Acqua di Parma Gelsomino Nobile edp in the early evening, my experience is that this one really blooms in summer. I need a change from the many citrus scents I usually wear.

    • Hey Ingeborg,
Clouds and summer rain can be very refreshing after a heat storm. I don’t know the Gelsomino Nobile, what’s it like?
Don’t you just LOVE finding a fragrance that you don’t feel the need to buy a bottle of? That seriously makes me happy.

      • Gelsomino Nobile is not very i challenging. Ther’s some citrus and then jasmine, but creamy rather than very indolic i think you might say. The brand usually has polished perfumes, doesn’t it?

Well, good not to fall for everything, but it so happens I’m waiting for a partial bell jar of tubéreuse criminelle, to arrive in August. Hopefully thinking of it will keep me away from too much tax free shopping later this month.

  6. Right now I smell of several different Fragonard scents, having happened upon a shop – had to go in and sniff and try a few things. The winner of the skin trials is fleur d’oranger Intense – it’s not complicated but it has some staying power considering it’s quite hot here and the Metro was very crowded and sweaty.

  7. NR Santal Musc for a very busy Monday. We’ve had actual summer weather here for the past month or so with temps in high 20s and low 30s, almost unheard of in recent years. It was overcast this morning so I thought I’d get away with the sandalwood as I was going to be working in the bowels of the building where sunlight cannot reach.

  8. Wearing Terracotta Le Parfum this Monday morning. Inspired by Brigitte’s current loyalty to Melograno, I plan to wear Terracotta daily for a while. Hope to enjoy a good portion of this bottle over the summer.

Terracotta was new when I first fell down the perfume rabbit hole, was it in 2014? I remember reading the reviews on perfume blogs, the rush of excitement. Bought a sample from STC and fell in love. By then all of the bottles were gone and I had to wait to find one. Terracotta was first announced as a limited edition, but it seems like it has been available every summer so far, so I’m safe for now.

    • Yay!!! please report back on your feeling about Terracotta as the days pass. I find that when I wear a perfume for an extended amount of time I see so many different facets of it….and I love that 🙂

  9. Been going through a weird phase of craving iris scents, and pale sorts of skin scents. So, last night was a break from that and I drenched myself in Bkack Perfecto.

Today, I plan on ELdO’s Putain and later on Bianchi’s Angel’s Dust.

  11. I found a bottle of vintage Givenchy III at the back of the cupboard. It turns to vegetable soup on the skin but smells bright and fresh on fabric. So I’m wearing 2-3 spritzes on my shirt.

  12. I got my first Mitsouko edp last week (blind buy) and I can barely smell it 30 minutes after (heavy) application. Doesn’t even last on fabric. It was purchased, NIB, on Amazon. Oh well, it only cost 40 USD, so…

  13. Late again, as always.

Monday was YSL Opium Pour Homme. I’m not sure about this one; it’s maybe a bit too big and brash for me.

Today I’m wearing Rochas Man because sometimes only coffee will do.

  14. Terracotta again today, it’s summer in a bottle. I am wearing than usual and was able to really appreciate the top notes. There’s a hint of something spicy hiding in there, a bit like cinnamon.

  15. Mad late to comment but today was super hectic! Inspired by Tiffanie yesterday to crack out the Terracotta. I don’t know why I don’t reach for this more often, especially with our fab weather.

  16. Melograno…..the middle marzipan has taken a liking to it as well so it looks like we are sharing it for the summer…this happens quite often…I will wear something for a while and one of the marzipans will like it so much they start to wear it as well …this is how I “lost’ my bottles of CSP Aloha Tiara and Vanille Abricot…..I am not complaining, though, because the whole house smells divine whenever the middle one wears either…plus, our fragrances are getting worn and loved rather than languishing in the basement….

and tiffanie, we are most definitely not a 2 spritz family-LOL! I have gone as far as 20-30 including skin and spray and walk through the air….so yes, we reek chez Marzipan!

  18. I finally received my bottle of YSL’s In Love Again (the previous editiion with a golden cap) yesterday, yay! It took two weeks to get it from Siberia which is kind of unusual (but not unheard of). I haven’t smelt ILA in seventeen years but it is exactly as I’d remembered: black currant and a hint of vodka.

  19. Wearing Terracotta again, third day this week. Still enjoying it very much.

Last night I craved something different but wanted to stay in soft floral territory. I settled on Infusion d’iris EdT plus a spritz of the Amande flanker. They smell like perfume-siblings, each with the same great bone structure, still beautiful in their own way.

  20. L’artisan Vanille Absolument today. Loving this perfume so much and was so so lucky to find a bottle for sale on ebay – not sure why i looked that particular day but someone must have known something. I ADORE IT! Have added a splash of Montale Honey Aoud to it, just because i can!

  21. Vintage Hermès Equipage today. This is the version with the knobbly brown lid. The batch code is illegible, but I think it’s around late ’80s, early ’90s vintage. Beautiful fragrance.

  23. Wearing Escale à Pondichéry, I think my second bottle of this will be finished by September!

Does anyone have suggestions for good , calming scents to wear to bed in the heat? I usually cannot tolerate lavender in perfume, nor am I a lover of rose perfumes in general.

    Like

    • I was going to suggest lavender but since that isn’t an option maybe a soft musk? Kumba Made has some nice musk oils or Dame Perfumery Musk for Man (it’s completely unisex). Also, maybe something with heliotrope? LT Piven’s Heliotrope Blanc? Or something with almonds? Berdoues Tonka & Almond?

      Like

      • That would be LT Piver…also thought of perhaps something that smells like expensive soap or clean sheets such as Jo Malone French Lime Blossom or something from the Philosophy line (Amazing Grace, Pure Grace, Baby Grace or Inner Grace) or the Clean line (some of their earlier releases).

Not sure how you feel about citrus but I really like Berdoues Assam of India in the summer with notes of lemon, tea and mysore sandalwood….I wore it for seven weeks straight in the summer of 2016, morning, day and night.

        Like

      • I’m not familiar with these. Don’t usually care for perfume oils. The Tonka and Almond is something I should take note of for later when it is cooler.

        Like

        • I have a bottle of that, sadly totally unloved. I should get round to finding a new home for it locally, postal restrictions are stopping me from sending it across the Atlantic!

      • Insence is not a favorite note at all, it feels often foreign (and not in a good way).

Salty I have just tried an Italian niche perfume, something with breeze in the name and then Wood Sage and Sea Salt which I seem to remember didn’t last long. I forgot which house has a perfume inspired by the coast of Brittany.

        Like

        • Was it the Miller Harris Fleurs de Sel? That’s a big favourite in the crikey household. I’ve never found a Jo Malone that works for me–they all vanish in a pale wisp. The Heeley Sel Marin is another I hanker after, but is probably too close to the FdS to justify.

          Like

        • Was it Brittany Breeze? I eyeball all fragrances with the name Brittany in it ….did you like it? I also tried yesterday for the first time Un Air de Bretagne….it was nice and the drydown good too.

          Like

          • The oneI tried was Brezza di Mare frim Profumi di Firenze. Nice salty note in it, but not seaside the way it smells along the Atlantic coast. I think it was the L’ Srtidsn one I ess thinking would be nice to try. IT Lions like one of the perfumes NOT avsilable here.

          • Ingeborg I got your ideas! I know my phone does the same 🙂

the l’Artisan one was really nice..I could see it being someone’s summer staple…and the bottle is so pretty as well…

            Like

      • See comment below. Thank you for your suggestions. In fact I started looking at my collection and found Voyage d’Hermes in edp, and it works quite well as a calming scent. Perhaps because of woody notes? The edp has little projection compared to the more citrus-y edt.

    • I always thought vetiver was not a note for me..until I started inventorying some of my favorite scents and realized that they all had vetiver in them…

I hope your day is improving at work 🙂

      Like

      • I hadn’t realised the vetiver connection initially either–I knew I was a push over for a good oakmoss, but vetiver snuck up on me and moved in before I noticed it was there.

Thanks, it is! (It’s just clients being clienty. One has a problem with the concepts of causation and linear time.)

It’s similar to Annick Goutal Songes (which is also in my collection) but it’s a bit lighter and more transparent. I’m going to pack it with me to take to LA next weekend where I will be doing some serious damage at luckyscent.!

Commando this morning as I get ready for the two hour trek into the city….the mini marzipans are going to Koreatown for the third and final summer trip…I am heading to Saks Fifth Avenue to explore the new beauty on 2 (second floor) completely revamped and chock full of niche brands that I have never been able to get my nose on….needless to say I am leaving my credit card at home!!!!

    • Leaving your credit card at home is a smart decision, and a brave one, too! Still, did you find anything full bottle – worthy?

      Like

      • Nope… thank God!! I spent two hours there and it is gorgeous..roomy bright with large windows overlooking Fifth Avenue.. the SAs were all lovely especially Darren from Eric Butterbaugh fragrances who made me a huge sample without me even asking but I bought nothing.. I did get a free promotional mini from Lartisan and finally got my nose on some Ormond Jayne and Portrait of a lady and Muscle Ravageur.

          • LOL’d at muscle ravageur, an excellent autocorrect. We should keep a list of those.

Portrait of a Lady, Bicarade Concentre, Jasmine Marzipane, Orange Bicardes, Iris Dragees, Santal Kardamon, Cedre Sambac, Myrrhe Eglantine, Agar Ebene, Cardamusc, Musc Pallida (the Hermes lasted a New York minute on my scent eating skin), Morning Chess, Room Service, Ta’if, Champaca, Frangipani and Chat Perche.

Still having trouble finding the right SOTD when it is this warm. Thursday I put on 6-7 sprays of Dior Escale à Pondichery, but with the heat and torrential rain with thunder and lightning I didn’t keep the fresh feeling for more than an hour! However, I did manage to place an order for a new bed. Now if I could only find some good chests of drawers. I tend to fall for design furniture and sometimes those pieces aren’t quite worth the price tag they come with. Just like perfume, not everything is a must-have on closer inspection.

  33. Missed a few days, so I’m catching up.

On Friday morning, I had an earworm of a bit of doggerel I wrote and published here a few years back, which inspired my choice of fragrance:

“When the depths of winter coment
I find citrusy scents are notent.
    What best suits my moudh
    Is the warm scented oudh
Of M7, by Yves St Laurent.

Saturday was Bastille Day, so I had to go French. I chose HdP Rosam. I went to the football and had the horrible thought that the team wearing red, white and blue might beat us on Bastille Day, but fortunately that didn’t happen.

Today it is ice all over the car, a serious nip in the air and just bloody cold. To perk myself up I’m indulging myself in a rarity – Dior Jules.

    Like

      • I have one partial bottle of Jules after shave that I found in an op shop, and a mini that I got on ebay as part of a vintage Dior coffret (which also had vintage Eau Sauvage, Eau Sauvage EDP and Fahreneheit in it).

I feel like that’s not a lot, so I tend to wear it very sparingly, like my Envy for Men. I guess I have to use them eventually but, once I do, that will be it.

  34. Faffing about with packing, so I will almost certainly smell of *everything* today, as I work out which scents to take with me tomorrow when I head off to Germany for a research summer school/colloquium. It’s going to be stupidly hot, and I want to find the right mix of interesting-inoffensive-non-overwhelming-courage-inducing fragrances to wear. (I’m thinking No.19 for the day I give my paper, maybe some Copal Azur, Aeon…)

Inoffensive sounds a bit wishy-washy. I think I just mean avoiding the giants that turn godzilla-scaled in heat and closed rooms.

Then had to change to something more potent while cleaning up the mess and getting rid of the terrible smell resulting from cooking catfish which was surely off, something I wasn’t sure about before it had been in the oven for some minutes. Seriously my whole place was reeking! So put on Citizen Queen , to have something nice to sniff and sat outside while airing all rooms.

I don’t know why I don’t trust my nose more than the “consume by” date, would have saved me 45 minutes of frantic cleaning. I guess this was a reminder to get a better fridge..
