Scent Diary: 2.2-8.2.2026

Portia

.

Hello Australian Perfume Junkies and friends, It’s been six years since I last did a Scent Diary. Lately there has been a little “wonder whether it would be fun to do again” in my brain. It’s a LOT of work but what it does do is inspire me to live life as fully as possible so there are things to talk about. This is a win.

Hoping you enjoy it and will let me know what’s happening in your lives too. What I really loved about Scent Diary was the interaction with perfumistas around the world. Jin and I have made so many friends, near and far, through perfume. So let’s reunite and welcome some new friends.

Scent Diary: 2.2-8.2.2026

Monday

Morning: Eau de Campagne by Sisley

Eau de Campagne

Afternoon: After reading Undina’s Saturday Question and finding out INeKE will be closing down I’m wearing Chemical Bonding. Terrible name, fabulous perfume. Old photo, juice level now in the silver band.

Chemical Bonding

Dinner: Bois Blanc by Frapin. It was on the cutting block but it’s too good to sell. I’m keeping it.

Bed: A Drop d’Issey by Issey Miyake. Cannot get enough of this super weird lilac, almond milk and rice cooking steam fragrance.

a drop d'issey

Woke up late. One of our dogs (Momo) has a tummy problem and had left a big sloppy present on the balcony. Luckily Jin was first responder. After he cleaned up he gave them a walk and then brought them in and had them jump on my bed, where they promptly found their spots and I cuddled them for an hour and lightly snoozed. What a heavenly way to awake.
For context, Jin’s days off are Sunday and Monday. That’s why he’s home.

Currently in the midst of culling the perfume wardrobe. The whole living room is a sea of bottles and boxes. So many unicorns. Culling is hard but having to dodge boxes filled with perfumes in boxes in the perfume room/office is even harder. The first 25 are up on our local FB page and some are already sold. Fingers crossed.

I made a couple of important Trivia phone calls. After 13 years we had one of our gigs finish and both the players and I  are really missing our weekly catch ups and having a fun evening in friendly competition. We have been to two clubs that we like and today was phone call day. Told to email details to both clubs! Very bloody exciting.

Jin is off playing golf today at his newly joined, ra sha sha golf club. This will be his first round taking a friend as guest. It’s a big deal and I’m so excited for him loving this hobby. Here they are at the 18th hole. How freaking happy are they?

Writing Trivia Q&A.

When Jin got home he was ravenous so we hit our favourite Korean BarBQ. We were so busy cooking, eating and catching up on the days events I forgot to take a pic. Soz.

Didn’t get my Trivia finished last night so up at sparrows fart to get it done. I knew there was work to do but looking up Q&A sent me down internet wormholes.

Also did the bulk of the clothes/towels washing and hanging. Tomorrow is bed linens.

You may know my mate Lisa has been given an ALS diagnosis. Expected lifespan from detection to death is outer limits 48 months. She’s not taking it lying down. She fighting for her life. We are doing a weekly podcast on it. ALS: To the Moon and Back. It’s on most streaming services. Come have a listen.
We did an episode today, it was fun and a little heartbreaking.

One of our dogs, Momo, has some runny poo. We think she ate something naughty on a walk or around the house. She is pooping on the balcony, something she’s not done since the first month we brought her home. Poor baby. On the walk today she pooped till it was basically mucus like water.  Let’s hope that’s the end of it.

Had my lunch and watched some Bridgerton. I’m currently rewatching it from the beginning. Up to Season 3! Then I can watch the latest installment. Woo Hoo!

Jin came home. Plonked himself in front of of Korean TV and fell asleep.

My upper right eyelid has had a spectacular sty. Almost disappeared now. I’m not going to work in drag tonight again. Hopefully next week.

Had my bubble bath and got seriously summer with Volupté by Oscar de la Renta. So bloody gorgeous

Work was fun.

Home to a few little mucky poos on the balcony. Fasting them tonight. Chicken mince and pumpkin for small meals at breakfast, lunch and dinner tomorrow.

Wanted to get some work done on my next installment of Sales Doc but chose to let myself enjoy the internet, some Bridgerton and my book before bed.

Wednesday

Morning: Mitsouko remnants

Day: Bulgari Jasmin Noir Essence. I’m bloody lucky this is discontinued. Choc licorice amber over amorphous floral fruity sweet nothings. Sounds ghastly, smells AH MAY ZING.

Woke to some sloppy poo on the balcony. Walked dogs, fairly empty. PHEW!

Went for my pedicure. Well overdue. LOVE the calm alone time just having a little self pamper. Yes, I know my feet are bashed up Hobbit like affairs. SOZ

Bought some pumpkin and chicken breast. Boiling them up to make sick doggo soup. Hopefully it will calm the poo-nami.

Did a bunch of around the house type stuff. Worked on the great perfume cull.

Today was really fun. Thursday has been my traditional day off for a few years now and I like to fill it with friends and low key adventures. This is the kind of day that made me want to start Scent Diary again. I was having these fantastic days and there was no real record of them. Looking back on some of the old posts over the Xmas break made me realize what an extraordinary tool they are to give me a snapshot of my life.

This morning Ersilia and Maria arrived at the butt crack of dawn, or very nearly. Maria drove us to town to see the Dangerously Modern exhibition at AGNSW. Based around women artists of Australian descent or multi return visitors who travelled to Europe between the years 1890 and 1940. Trailblazing, fearless women who travelled Europe and the UK in packs for safety and worked tirelessly on their arts. It was a time of huge shift. The six week steamer cruise between Australia and Europe, instead of six months on sailboat, made it all far easier. These women brought a new, intimate, feminine approach to art and were heavily influenced by the European masters. It’s SUCH a good exhibition, I think I’ve been through it 10 times so far. I’m a member, so it’s all included. Another mate, and working artist, Jean Luc joined us too and his insights were very interesting, on top of the tour guides.

Then we lunched in the bustling Member’s Lounge.

Dangerously Modern AGNSW 1 Scent Diary

Jean Luc and I wandered the 20th Century collections for a while afterwards and then I had a super secret rendezvous with a girlfriend who eschews any pictures. We had what Aussies call High Tea and the rest of the world calls Afternoon Tea at our famous QVB building, the the QVB Tea Rooms.
You’ll note in the first pic that the historic coloured glass panels are in place. Recently the building’s owner tried to get them removed for a cleaner, modern look but public outrage stopped it. YAY!

QVB High Tea Scent Diary

Afterwards I met up with Joanna, who had bought some perfume of my FB Sales Doc. We hit Penhaligon’s, Creed and Parfums de Marly before we had to skedaddle to our next adventure. We were having so much fun that I forgot to take photos. I’m so sorry. Yes, I know it’s called Scent Diary. We got carried away.

I did score this fabulous set of Parfum de Marly Les Extraits samples. Joanna got a Greenly sample. Can’t wait to get my sniff on these. Go see Michael at the Strand Arcade Parfum de Marly store if you’re in Sydney. He’s the best. Tell him Portia sent you.

Parfum de Marly Les Extraits samples

We then hit my favourite Sydney bar at the Kimpton Margot. It’s the lobby area of the hotel and fabulously Art Deco, with 21st century reimagined 1970s Deco interiors. The staff are friendly and the drinks only moderately expensive. Joanna and I were joined by longtime friends and ex APJ writers Eve and TinaG. My wedding to Jin, Best Man Phil was a late entrant. He thought he’d be too tired but was able to join us. Big YAY!

Kimpton Margot

After drinks, Eve, Phil and TinaG came down to a newly discovered noodle bar in the heart of Sydney and we gorged on noodles, dumplings and the others had tofu. We were having such a good time catching up and discussing EVERYTHING that there were no photos taken. SOZ.

Here are Phil and TinaG as we head to the train station to make our ways home.

Jin, the superstar, collected me at the Parramatta train station. We came home, brushed teeth, Jin hit the sack, I joined and had a chat and then he went off to sleep.

Watched some Bridgerton

I’m totally bushed. Few Gilded Lily spritzes and off to bed and fell into a dead people sleep.

Up early. Walked the dogs.

Worked on my Sale Doc and separating the keep from cull. There are now seven boxes of perfumes to go. I’m being as ruthless as possible, even though I’m also keeping so many.

Followed up on the two clubs we are hoping to get Turbo Trivia into. One has sent the prospectus on to their overarching club conglomerate. Fingers crossed. Was told it’s better to call the other on Monday. Cool.

Jin came home. We watched some Winter Olympics together. he is sports mad and can watch any of it. Sure he has favourites but he gets excited for them all, mainly for the players. He gets really emotionally involved. It’s cute.

We also changed the bed linen together. I spent a couple of hours washing and drying it all. Sheets on the line till near dry and then a burst in the dryer. Doona covers straight in the dryer. It’s so hot here that the sheets were almost dry anyway, but I like the soft touch they get in the dryer, even for 10 minutes.

We went to our favourite Vietnamese restaurant for dinner. Very nice. At the end of the year we are taking Jin’s Mum and Dad to Thailand for their 50th Wedding Anniversary.  On our way home we are spending three nights in Vietnam. Jin is treating himself/us for his beautiful present and grand gesture to Umma and Appa. I’ve not been there in nearly 20 years so am very excited to go back.

Home for more Winter Olympics while I continued culling perfumes and making up boxes of keepers.

Watched some Bridgerton till 4am! Jin came out to get ready for work and was completely shocked. HA! So enthralling. Finished Series 3, ready to start the new one.

Bathed, bed.

Bed: Boucheron woman EdT

Slept so late! Being up till 4am tends to discombobulate my body clock.

Walked the dogs straight away because today is 37°C (99f) and I didn’t want them to expire en route. They’re old. Good news. Momo’s poo is firming up. Steamed pumpkin and chicken is good. Now she’s better I’ve done another batch with rice as well.

Tidied this place up (boy clean, not mother in laws first visit). Vacuumed the living areas and Jin’s room. I’ll get to my side of the apartment tomorrow.

Invoicing. Last month and this month. Boring but necessary. Got sidetracked and did almost zero.

Lunch

Jin arrived home, we both had afternoon naps.

I wandered 12 holes of golf with Jin. It had come over cloudy and temperatures dropped to about 33°C. There was a cool breeze and the walk was really good. We chatted and I kept score for him. It’s a hilly course and we were both sweating like farm hands. Very satisfying.
The garden crew are amazing and there’s a huge variety. Mostly Australian natives but some surprising beauties like these South African Proteas. There is even a little citrus orchard that were in full bloom, the scent was utterly intoxicating.

Then we had Red Rooster Chicken for dinner. It’s like a better than KFC choice but equally as delicious. Their hot chips are the best fast food hot chips I’ve had anywhere. MMMMMMM

We watched a little Winter Olympics, Jin went to bed where we talked for about half an hour then he fell asleep.

I fed and walked the dogs.

Now I’m utterly wrecked. Going to have a bath and then bed.

Very slow morning. Pottered around getting almost nothing done.

Jin is working. Once a month he has to be on site to make sure the crews that come to fix his home depot are all looked after and kept safe. They can only do some of this stuff on a Sunday when there are no workers in the office building.

My BFF Kath came over for sandwiches and catch ups at lunchtime. It’s a fairly regular Sunday afternoon event. It’s a lovely couple of hours two way download and laughs. We walked the dogs. Kath really hates having her photo taken but I stole this pic from her instagram. You can just see me in the kitchen window.

Had some quiet reading time and a bubble bath.

Went into town to meet one of my fabulous girlfriends Rose (Rose Ang, chef, look her up). We used to live together with my last long term boyfriend in the early naughties. Anyway, she is in Sydney for 36 hours and we had dinner in Darling Harbour. Jin surprised us too.

Nevermore by Frapin GIVEAWAY

Hey Hey APJ,

Last weeks Veil by Oliver + Co winners are MMKinPA, Verbenaluvvr, Greg and Fragrant Wanderer
(Please send me your address to portia (_) turbo (at) yahoo (.) com (.) au even if I’ve sent you stuff before. I don’t keep your addresses on file here)

Today we are talking about a re-release of the 2014 P Frapin & Cie favourite Nevermore. Totally reformulated to make it more approachable and saleable. It’s very easy to tell the difference between the original and modern because the modern juice is clear, like water. I was given the Press Bottle by Libertine Parfumerie at their seasonal update recently.

Then this ebony bird beguiling my sad fancy into smiling,
By the grave and stern decorum of the countenance it wore,
“Though thy crest be shorn and shaven, thou,” I said, “art sure no craven,
Ghastly grim and ancient Raven wandering from the Nightly shore—
Tell me what thy lordly name is on the Night’s Plutonian shore!”
            Quoth the Raven “Nevermore.”
V8 The Raven by Edgar Allan Poe

Nevermore by P Frapin & Cie

Anne-Sophie Behaghel

Fragrantica gives these featured accords:
Aldehydes, nutmeg, black pepper, rose, amber, atlas cedar, saffron

Nevermore is a queer bird. It opens like road base in the rain. The aldehydes, black pepper and maybe nutmeg/rose combo are like something dark, inky, wet and arctic. It’s like opening a brand new geometry set as a kid, the metallic and plastic smell so fresh and new.

The only thing I can compare it to (and they are not the same but have a similar scent feeling) is the later stages of Byredo Black Saffron. I repeat, not the same but they share a style.

Even so, this modern Nevermore is infinitely more wearable and approachable than my memory of the original.

Leave a comment below. Four lucky people from anywhere in the world will get a decant.

Have you tried any P Frapin & Cie?

New Sniffs: 13.9.2018

Hey Hey Perfume Junkies,

APJs new Thursday thing for September. Hoping to combat the guilt I feel when so much arrives and so little gets written about, the idea of New Sniffs emerged.

The idea is that anything worthy of comment, either good or bad, that’s passed under my nose through the week will get a short write up. Up till now I have kept APJ positive comments only, those days are gone. If I think something is terrible, shamefully lazy, greedy or stupid and you should know about it, it will be said. Not everything works for everyone and it would be pretty boring if it did >>> YMMV. I’d love it if you all agree, respectfully disagree, have any thought-out opinion and want to share, do so in the comments below. The point is starting a conversation.

NEW!: Creed, Juliette Has A Gun and Frapin

.

Post by Ainslie Walker

.

Nick Smart’s desk at Agence de Parfum’s HQ (Libertine Parfumerie) often holds exciting secrets. Last week he had just returned from a buying trip in Europe…Squeal!! I dashed for the pile of boxes and had a quick sniff. These are my first thoughts and REVEALS:

NEW!: Creed, Juliette Has A Gun and Frapin

A fleeting whiff! New niche releases

Creed Royal Princess Oud

Creed: Princess Oud is an oriental floral for women launching in Australia in March 2016, also created by in-house nose Oliver Creed. Before sniffing I thought of the words “princess” and “oud” and conjured up an imagined scent being sweet, girlie and dense with oud. I was right. An appealing, possibly heading towards ‘crowd pleasing,’ fragrance which paves a pathway between Middle Eastern and Western perfumes. It’s far too icky-sweet for me, personally. Maybe not so original but it’s done very well, this review is from a card so skin mileage will vary.

Creed: Royal Mayfair, a unisex fragrance launching here in December is a remake of Windsor, the limited edition of 2009, renamed and no longer limited. Whoop! Windsor was originally created in 1936 for King Edward VIII of England. Ingredients take us on a tour of the British Empire he ruled and makes for an interesting olfactive tale, in which Australia features, with the inclusion of “our” eucalyptus. Nose Oliver Creed has combined London gin, Jamaican lime, Scottish Highland pine tree atop of “Duke of Windsor” roses and orange from the Bahamas over Canadian cedar and AUSTRALIAN eucalyptus. I stopped and took notice when I first sniffed and it gets better and more beautiful and distinctive on drydown. My current gin based fragrance is Penhaligon’s Juniper Sling…could this be next?

Frapin: The Orchid Man is being compared to Aventus and due in Australia for release in January. Call me an alien but I am no massive fan of Aventus. Obviously I appreciate it, but mostly it’s too macho, and frankly that’s not who I like to nuzzle up too. Add to this all the comments re “panty dropping” I see on fragrance forums and I think its killed it for me (pants definitely up to the point of wedging!) My favourite pineapple note in perfumes is in Frapin’s 1270. So I was intrigued thinking, “could Frapin’s take possibly be a better and more affordable Aventus with 1270’s magical pineapples and woods?” No. It’s missing the pineapple sadly, but it is very similar to Aventus.

Juliette Has A Gun Another oud

Juliette Has a Gun: Another Oud will be released in Australia in Feb 2016 (lets hope this means another visit to Oz from sexy Parisian, Romano Ricci, father of the brand..!) I smell the musks and ambroxan JHAG are famous for with oud floating up eventually from underneath. A dry oud scent. On the skin however Another Oud comes to life and there’s more to it than first expected, including some raspberry fruit and intensifying oud. I’d like to spend more time with this fragrance as it has all the elements to be very sensual.

Fragrance Inspired Cocktail Recipes

Hope you have a lovely weekend planned. I have some scent inspired cocktail recipes to help you on your merry way!

These delicious cocktails I tasted recently in Melbourne at Galerie de Parfum’s Cocktail and Perfume Masterclass in Myers Melbourne. Mixologist Justin Ryann Forsyth has been extremely generous giving me access to the recipes for his own scent cocktail creations.

Fragrance Inspired Cocktail Recipes #1

My recent APJ post shared with you the Empressa cocktail, inspired by Penhaligon’s new fragrance for the season

Today I will share some lovely winter warmers, perfect for a cozy evening:

Frapin1270 Frapin FragranticaPhoto Stolen Fragrantica

1270 by Frapin

You can read Portia’s APJ 1270 review, which first alerted me to one of my now favorite fragrances

30 ml Drambuie
15 ml glenmorangie 10 yr scotch whisky
15 ml Lillet Rouge
3 dashes plum bitters

Add all ingredients to mixing glass, and then fill up with ice. Using a bar spoon, begin to stir the drink quickly, being careful not to break any ice. Stir until desired dilution is reached, then double strain into a coupette or similar short glass. Garnish with a dash of orange bitters or orange peel if desired. We didn’t do this for the presentation, but as a cocktail itself, the orange really brings it together.

Loukhoum Keiko Mecheri FragranticaPhoto Stolen Fragrantica

Loukhoum by Keiko Mecheri

I fell in love with Loukhoulm during the Myers/Galerie de Parfum masterclass evening (and the moment was photographed, unbeknownst to me). For me it is smooth, sensual and womanly. Summed up, it is vanilla-almond-honey-rose notes, inspired by Turkish delight, which is far from my usual fragrance choices. However Loukoulm is much more than a sweet mess, having depth, warmth and providing some immediate comfort. The “comforting” component may be down to an almost Johnston’s and Johnston’s baby powder/oil-esque note….but far more deluxe. Loukoulm hugged close to my skin and was still there many hours later. Much creamier and deeper than other Turkish delight inspired fragrances such as Jo Malone Rose Water and Vanilla Cologne. There is the hint of the rose and iris smells of makeup -now so trendy with the release of Chanel’s Misia-but this is rounded and less screechy in its rose notes. Mixed in with almond nuttiness, the smell of hawthorn, one of my favorite cool weather notes. Something motherly and beautifully warm.

I would love to wear this on a date, as I am sure it would be perfect for an intimate candlelit dinner for two….followed with the following cocktail for dessert:

15 ml Crème de Cacao (or desired chocolate liqueur)
15 ml Cherry Heering liqueur
15 ml Amaretto
10 ml Monin Orgeat Syrup
5 ml Campari
2 dashes Fee Bro’s orange bitters
Egg white (optional)

Combine all ingredients in cocktail shaker, and shake hard until all ingredients have combined evenly. Double strain into a chilled coupette or similar short glass. If using egg white, wet shake as above, then double strain into another shaker, then shake without ice to create a thick white foam. When finished, garnish with a cherry and 3 dashes Bob’s chocolate bitters.

Enjoy your weekend!

Xx Ainslie

1270 by Sidonie Lancesseur for Frapin 2010

Hi there Perfume Junkies,

How are you all? Hopefully happy and well. If not happy, remember emotions are like rain, you can’t control them and they will pass, hugging you from here. XXX

We have talked about 1270 on APJ before, have loved its sweet, shimmery, boozy fun. I was going through stuff and found a really big decant that had come from Dalbir at Aussie fragrance Network on FB me ages ago. What better way to celebrate a find than to share it around.

Base: Wood, Guaiac wood, white honey, vanilla

Sweet and sugared glace fruits, dipped in booze and pepper, fizzy, fun and fabulous. I am finding myself more and more in love with the fruity sweet frags lately. How did I come so late to this?

A little of the fun of Angel and Liberté but softer and gentler. A small reminder of a Serge Lutens boozy fruit opening too. Yet for all these reminders 1270 manages to be its own animal, something young and lovely that will grab you in its sugared embrace and sweep you off to the ball, there’s even an animalic honey. You want to smell a little like the masses but BETTER? 1270 offers a gold plated version that dries down to a lovely sweet vanilla for me.

If you are a serious perfumista who wants a three ring circus and all the bells and whistles I think this is about as close as a sweet fruity frag will take you, for anyone who merely wants to smell sweet and intoxicatingly alluring then 1270 should be on your list, to be honest you’ll probably want to buy a pallet of it.

Special THANKS to LibertineParfumerie for these amazing giveaways. Please visit their site because they are so generous and helpful. If you wonder why they are sometimes more expensive than the discounters or OS retailers it’s because they are the only licensed company selling their fragrances in Australia; where you know you are buying new, fresh and genuine product. The cost of importing, and buying the right to import, alcohol based fragrances (and having the right to send alcohol based fragrances throughout Australia, which are illegal to send in the Australia Post air system) is expensive and they must cover their costs to bring you these luxury goods.

Passion Boisee by Jeanne-Marie Faugier for P Frapin & Co 2007

Hello Fragrant Family,

My mate Nick from Libertine Parfumerie sometimes gives APJ product for giveaways. A package from Nick is ALWAYS a sweet surprise and he is a lovely guy who wants to have a great range of fragrance for Aussies to choose from. Please, even if you don’t enter today’s competition, go and have a look at the amazing fragrant beauties that Libertine Parfumerie has for sale, you will be astounded. Lately Nick’s buying power has become so good that some (not all) of his products are the same numerical value as you would buy them for in the USA, that means with the current Aussie dollar that they are in fact 10-15% cheaper!!! AMAZING!

Fragrantica gives these featured accords:
Top: Tangerine, nutmeg, rum, clove
Heart: Oakmoss, oak
Base: Patchouli, leather, cedar

Before anything else I want you to know how much I love the Frapin bottles. Heavy, great shape, excellent atomiser that gives a super blast. The whole packaging has been beautifully thought out and will look great as a gift or as the single bottle of scent on most mens counters. Not that women wouldn’t wear Passion Boisee, or any Frapin, but I can definitely see the men falling in love with the whole aesthetic.

So my nose gets a lovely gust of citrus, booze and a cool note that reads to me like pipe tobacco for a short while which then softens off considerably within 20 minutes and becomes a very light, forest floor over skin scent. Passion Boisee becomes a barely there shimmer of depth, an extra hint of the wild. Subtle to the point of subconscious. I pretty much lose the ability to smell Passion Boisee after an hour on myself but when sprayed on Jin it is a completely different beast and every time I come close to him its presence is noticeable and damn sexy. Powerful and sexy undertones, like pheromones.

I don’t get much play through the notes after the initial fireworks. I get cool forest, jungle floor, masculine, slightly animal and a feeling of power. I imagine this smell is how a jungle tiger feels. There, not there, camouflaged yet deadly and powerful. I think Passion Boisee would make an excellent work or date scent, a very under the radar reminder that the wearer is dangerous and focused and hungry.

If you like to proclaim your fragrance wearing in no uncertain terms then I think Passion Boisee will be too soft, too quietly confident.
