Shop Your Collection Favourites: Scent Task #2

Hey there APJ,

A couple of weeks ago on the Facebook group For Love Not Money: Fragrance Appreciation Group we were asked to write for 5 days about frags we rarely wear. This week I asked if we could do ones we LOVE! Sometimes when I spritz my favourites I smell the first few seconds and then it becomes background smell, basically I know I smell good and ignore it. By choosing our favourites this week I hoped to be able to examine a few of my faves and live the fully present enjoyment rather than missing the fun.

Here’s how my week turned out.

Shop Your Collection Favourites: Scent Task #2

Scent Task #2: Tell us about your most worn scents.

Following on from our group task last week, when we wore neglected scents from our collections for 5 days, next week we are going to do the opposite. Wear and write about your favourite and/or most worn scents for 5 days. Portia Turbo-Gear suggested we do this, and I think it’s a fabulous idea.

Here’s the format:

1. Wear 5 of your most worn scents from your collection for 5 days, starting next Monday the 25th August. No posts on the weekend as we are all too busy.
2. Tell us what you like about these scents, and why you think they get the most wear out of all your scents. What makes them special, dependable and favoured?
3. Try to keep your post brief, no more than 150 words. Creative interpretations welcome.

Liberte by Cacharel FragranticaPhoto Stolen Fragrantica

Scent Task #2: Monday: Liberte by Cacharel:

I love this mad fun fizzy beauty. Imagine Fizz Wizz in searing citrus and you have a taste equivalent of Liberte. Remember having a SPIDER? Of all the fizzy fruity frags out there this is the one that stole my heart.
Often when I am unsure of what to spritz I find the violently coloured orange tube spritzing away already. MMMMMMMMM

Jardins d'Armide Oriza L. Legrand FragranticaPhoto Stolen Fragrantica

Scent Task #2: Tuesday: Jardins d’Armide by Oriza L Legrand:

Honey, Powder, Almonds, Soap, Flowers all rolled together in the most fabulously unusual way. I think the iris is treated in a sweet, sugared musk way and while the fragrance is not loud or BIG, it has the ability to change and charge the air around me and be completely present yet not intrusive. Jardins d’Armide is one of my favourites because it feels plush and super exclusive but I can wear it with anything,

Ballet Rouges FragranticaPhoto Stolen Fragrantica

Scent Task #2: Wednesday: Ballets Rouges by Olympic Orchids:

I love roses. There I’ve said it. Ballets Rouges is the ultimate rose soliflor for me. Yes it has the smell of roses on the bush, it also has the smell of the earth that the roses grew in, the humus, fertilisers, mulch, add to that the smell of the cut stem and the torn leaf and on top of all that it has the smell of life and living to my nose. Bright and dark simultaneously Ballets Rouges is everything I love about Independent Perfumery: it has not followed a formula, never been panel tested, is full of gorgeous ingredients that are probably banned in 27 languages and it has a wonderful big voluptuousness and scent story. Almost every time I wear Ballets Rouges someone compliments and asks what it is. WINNER!

Shalimar Guerlain FragranticaPhoto Stolen Fragrantica

Scent Task #2: Thursday : Shalimar by Guerlain Vintage Extrait:

Shalimar is QUEEN! I know it’s been written about a thousand times but EVERY time I apply it lavish, lovely, silky caress I am overcome with so many emotions. It symbolises a scent that has followed me through my life and still I get shivers and goosebumps as it envelopes me in it glamorous embrace. Creamy lemon sorbet, a floral bouquet and a vanilla leather dry down that frankly brings me undone. If I had to take only one fragrance with me for the rest of my life, Shalimar would be it.

Sharp Andrea Maack FragranticaPhoto Stolen Fragrantica

Scent Task #2: Friday: Sharp by Andrea Maack:

Sharp is anything but. In fact sharp is the real smell of the feeling of fiberglass roof insulation. Imagine how feeling it would be, both soft and prickly and a little suffocating yet Sharp also manages to be warm as a hug from a loved one. The vanilla is totally un-foody and wears like sandalwood, white flower (orange blossom is the note but I just get a breathy white flower) and then the whole thing draped in lovely musks both laundry and animalic. Excellent wear time and so plush.

  1. I am with you on shalimar! Besides cacharel, I have never even tested the other lines you mention. I have some sampling to do. My own most reached for fragrance, in fall at least, is a toss up between vanille 44 and ambre des merveilles. Mmm.. they are both delicious and easy to wear. Kind of my-skin-but-better fragrances.
Thanks for the draw! I follow by email and Feedly.

  2. I follow by email and a favorite fragrance in my collection would certainly be L’Air de Rien. I’ve really wanted to try Ballets Rouges for a while.

  3. This summer, my favorites have been TDC Rose Poivree and Mugler Cologne. I have worn the Mugler Cologne the most because it is perhaps less offensive for the office than the Rose Poivree(which I love to death, sweaty notes and all!), and it makes me feel ever so slightly more clean and awake when I wear it. I follow by email.

  4. I love your description of Ballet Rouges, Portia, and would love to sample it. I’m really digging Bond no 9 (remember when it was the darling of bloggers circa 2007?) Chinatown right now. A gourmand with tonka, so it’s slightly woody and just lasts and lasts on my skin. Yes, I even wear it to Chinatown.

  5. I follow by email. My most-reached-for, without doubt, is vintage Opium. If I could have a vat of the original, I’d wear it for the rest of my life. But the others on my most-worn list surprise me: Gothic I, LM Sensual Orchid, DK Black Cashmere, and Kate Walsh Boyfriend. Don’t know what Kate is doing on that list, but I go through her scent pretty fast and find it right for all kinds of occasions.

  6. My most reached for fragrance has been Blue Sugar. Because it was always handy, because it is sweet and comfortable, and easy to wear when I don’t care to put any thought into anything.
    I follow by email

  7. Hi Portia,
DNEM. I just have to say that 5 of my top 6 this summer (I added one) are PNW fragrances: Femmes Savantes – a tart lemon, leafy cedar by La Comedie des Parfums, Wild Spruce and Tobacco – cool, woodsy, menthol by Pirouette, V. Van Gogh, another Les Comedie fragrance full of orange, lemon and flowers, The Rosarium – a surprising blend of Bulgarium rose and styrax by Rosarium Blends and, like you, Olympic Orchids Ballets Rouge, my anywhere, anytime rose. The sixth scent is an Italian, Borsari Parma’s Acqua Classica – plenty of refreshing citrus and herbs in a monster ten ounce bottle.
    Azar xx

  8. Love the daily emails! One of my favorite scents currently, is the Eau Du Cloitre by Le Couvent Des Minimes. Dirt cheap and one of the best light green rose frags out there!

  9. DNEM

I like the idea. Several years ago at some point I realized that I was wearing perfumes that I tested most of the time neglecting those that already were in my collection. At that point I made a rule to wear one of my favorites at least twice a week. Since then my habits changed and I wear only perfumes from my collection – 6 days a week – and do testing when I work from home or in evenings and weekend mornings.

  10. It’s always hard to choose a favorite to me, probably I have a bit of a moody taste… not an absolute favorite, but a wonderful fragrance I had the luck to add to my collection two years ago is Cacharel Gloria. That’s the scent I wear to feel provoking and cuddly at the same time.
Before trying it I couldn’t believe all the hype around it, but really there is something addictive about its boozy almond/cherry opening, soon followed by a scrumptious tapestry of floral creaminess that ends to a balmy and woody base. I love the fact it is quite complex, but it never feels pretentious or complicated. It is just right, and effortlessly enchanting.

I follow by email, thank you for the chance!

  11. My tried and true Chanel No 5 gets the spritz for occasions -it’s perfection and I can’t imagine anyone not liking it!
My other favourites include Jo Malone Red Roses, Lea by Calypso St Barthe and La Fille de Berlin, I just want to smell them all day. Art in a bottle. Follow by email. 🙂

  12. Tiempe Passate has been my smell for 15 years. It is incredible on my skin, forever changing with my moods and the weather. I still sniff my arm….
I follow by email. Thank you!!!

  13. My favorite perfume since falling down the rabbit hole is Roberto Cavalli Oro. It has just enough spice to warm it up (although someone who didn’t wear Opium for 20 years might have a different scale for spiciness), along with a gorgeous, creamy apple/magnolia/whatever that entrances me at first sniff and then settles into the heart. To sum up, it is both beautiful and comfortable.

I follow with Bloglovin, and would be thrilled to try your first four picks, but your comparison of Sharp to fiberglass insulation has put me right off. That combination of pain and itch when it gets under your skin is a singularly unpleasant experience. That one will have to be tried gingerly, with rubbing alcohol and laundry detergent at the ready.

  14. I follow by email.

My favourites at the moment are (because I can’t choose just one 🙂
La Fille de Berlin: To me this is the perfect rose
L”ambre des Merveilles – So warm and delicious – perfect for winter.

  15. I don’t like difficult questions, and highlighting one fragrance in my collection is as hard as climbing Everest…or at least Kilimanjaro… 🙂 Lots of loves, lots of memories…
Aromatics Elixir, Citizen Queen, Le Baiser du Dragon, Lovely. And more. But I also have favorites that are not in my collection, subjects of late night meditations and daydreaming. Well, most probably, you’ll have that kind of task, too – then, I will share my cravings!
Thanks for the draw, Portia! I hope I could be in since I missed the first one, and I am last-minute commenting on this one. I only know Liberte and Shalimar, the others intrigue me a great deal!

  16. One of my favorites is Dzing! by l’Artisan Parfumeur. It was the first fragrance I smelled where I could see the prose in the copy writing actually describing what was going on. Mainly, though, it’s one of my favorites because it smells lovely.

    I follow by email.
