Lux + Nuit Noire by Mona di Orio (re-release) 2014

It is difficult to know where to start when there has already been so much written about these two fragrances. I will take the chance to inform those who don´t know that Lux and Nuit Noire are available again. They have been re-launched in their original formulas.

Mona di Orio (re-release) 2014: Signature Collection

Lux Mona di Orio- Sensual and erotic

Mona di Orio gives these featured accords in one line (Press Release):
Sicilian lemon, litsea cubeba, bigarade petitgrain, Haitian vetiver, Mysore cedarwood, sandalwood, musk, amber, Siamese benzoin, Bourbon vanilla

Kicks off with a sparkling and delightful lemon. This is no cologne though. The development can be compared to throwing a pebble into the water. The immediate splash is the delicious citrus, but as the ripples spread, the vetiver appears and very slowly it takes us towards the most sensual vanilla and and earthy lemon with musks and amber and sandalwood swirling in along the way. Lux is Latin for light. It is also a stunning fragrance, turning from light into shadow and then back again to a warm soft lingering glow. Lux must be tried on the skin to experience the passionate journey that ensues. Lux is not too sweet, harmonizes beautifully and is absolutely stunning on a man.

Nuit Noire Mona di Orio- Lie me down and tether me tightly

Mona di Orio gives these featured accords in one line (Press Release):
Orange flower, cardamom, ginger, orange, frankincense, cinnamon, tuberose, sandalwood, clove, cedarwood, amber, leather, musk, tonka

I would be careful about wearing this one in the office. The same applies if you have been diagnosed with a heart condition.

It is so hardcore in the first few moments, that you need to be careful not to inhale too deeply and thus risk droplets
hanging off of your nose hair. Indolic orange, skunky cardamom and hot ginger. It is quite thrilling. By the time you try to figure out what´s going on, it calms down into a warm seductive combination of tuberose and spices and you have a while to savour the experience. Slowly it moves on into musk, leather, tonka and amber. It is carnal, yet creamy
and velvety throughout. Nuit Noire will not be for all perfume lovers, but should be tried by as many who have the chance. Intoxicating, stimulating and über-feminine.

The the newly designed black transluscent oval flacons just for Lux and Nuit Noire are very striking.

First In Fragrance has €140/75ml

Spending time with Jeroen Oude Sogtoen, co-founder and Creative Director of MdO was one of the highlights of 2014. His passion is inspiring. He buttons up his shirts and doesn´t pretend to be a perfumer.

Much thanks to Jeroen and Henrike for their kindness in Florence.

  1. Great review Val! Nuit Noire is dirty and sultry and fabulous. I picked up a bottle a month or so back (original) and I also have some Lux in transit so can check that out soon too. NN Has been fine for me in the office – maybe I’m not wearing enough?! Heh… Great that these have been re-released so a few more people have access to these two. x Tina

  2. You are a VERY LUCKY PERFUMISTA! What a wonderful time you had at Pitti.
These sound so fabulous and I adore the bottles. Even if the juice was rubbish I’d want one.

  4. Really enjoyed this, Val! I always remember my first brush with Nuit Noire: I had just gotten into perfumes, and somebody sent me a sample box that had a dab of the original Nuit Noire in it. My kindly husband’s perfume critiques are usually limited to “nice,” “really nice,” and ” not as nice as some of your others,” but he sniffed freshly applied Nuit Noire and said “WTF?!! ” we were both a little appalled by it, but years later I bet we would both love it. But, if the reissue is true to the original, your caution against office wear is well taken

    • Jeroen Sogtoen said it was the same. I am sure it is. I have never man more passionate than he. Yes the opening is a bomb, which gradually softens. Love it. xxxxxx

  5. Like Feral Jasmine, I smelled Nuit Noire back when I was just getting into perfumes and it really put me off, but now since my tastes have developed, I bet I will like it. Lux I smelled right before it disappeared from the market a few years ago, and it smelled like furniture polish (Lemon Pledge, to be exact). Not being a citrus fan I am betting I still won’t like that one.

    • I liked the Lux on me, but loved it on my husband. I found it to be very masculine. Not caring for lemon could make it difficult ……. I had never tried Nuit Noire. The opening definitely stunned me. Wow. xxx

  6. I knew next to nothing about these two Val, so I was greateful for your take. Lux sounds to-die-for on a guy and I need to try Nuit Noire just for the palpatations 🙂 x

  7. Argh! Just when I thought I was slowing down and not wanting to try anything new, you go ahead and give a thoroughly enticing description of Nuit Noire. Must find a tiny sample somewhere. I hang my head in shame, as I just promised the DH that I would organize and downsize my collection to the perfumes I actually wear. Sigh.

    • It is worth trying, but I think your relationship is more important! I am sure it will come into your life at some unexpected moment!! Maybe you live in a country where it´s easy to get hold of? (I think it is only just about to be released actually). Nice to see you Tatiana! xxx

  8. I didn’t care for Lux much when I tested it for the first time and I don’t think I’ll like Nuit Noire but I’ll give it a try if I get a chance because the bottle is just gorgeous and I’d love to have it my collection (provided I like the perfume).

    • Hello Undina! Yes, the bottles are truly lovely. And they weigh a lot, thus feeling absolutely luxurious. A whole bottle of Nuit Noire would last a lifetime and beyond though. And I must add, albeit not in quite the right place – I LOVE Boxeuses and it is hands down my favorite Lutens. Actually it is the only one I wear. Thanks to a particularly awesome person, I have a bell at of it. Hugs! xxxx
