Moon Dance by Juliette Has A Gun 2014

Hey there Frag Family,

We got to spend the afternoon with the gorgeous Romano Ricci today. He was handsome, rumpled, friendly and flirty. Who are we? Ainslie Walker and Catherine de Peloux Menage from APJ, Clayton Ilolahia from What Men Should Smell Like and Yelena from BeautyDirectory. Nick was there from Libertine Parfumerie because he imports JHaG to Australia and the great girls of ÉLYSÉE COLLECTIVE promotions.

We were the last group of the afternoon and it was champagne all round, a fun and friendly vibe and Romano was very happy to have a group who knew fragrance and could talk intelligently with him on his subject. Our half hour stretched into one and a half hours and we had a wonderful time. Romano Ricci is charming, so freaking charming.

Fragrantica gives these featured accords:
Top: Bergamot
Heart: Tuberose, rose, violet
Base: Patchouli

Released in 2014 and created by Romano Ricci with a little help from his friends Moon Dance, and its 2013 sister Oil Fiction, is so far sideways to the Juliette Has A Gun aesthetic that I’m surprised he didn’t start a new brand line rather than calling it the Luxury Collection. I’ve always felt that the Juliette Has A Gun label was heavily marketed to working Goths, a dark edged house with well put together and presented fragrances. I have slightly missed Romano’s point though. He tells us that he wanted Juliette to stand for the ill fated Shakespearean heroine and the gun to be her polar opposite but when working together create a new, powerful woman for which such tragedy could be avoided. My limited experience though tells me that a world without guns would be a better place.

When I spritz the bergamot fizzes off in an instant and I have a lush, slightly metallic bouquet with a waxy overtone that I would normally associate with saffron or orange blossom. My skin plays silly buggers with fragrance as you may know and even Romano was surprised how his fragrances live on my skin. What Moon Dance does smell is expensive and elegant, a nocturnal wander through the dream of an island paradise. The tuberose is fatty and yet the rose makes it crisp, the violets play a very lovely background, all is underpinned by animal and I am in paradise. The modern patchouli is sheer and I get very little of the murky depths that I often associate with it, here it is bathed in moonlight and twined through with night blooming flowers that call their seductive siren song. Moon Dance is the call of the temptress: a fairy queen that beguiles and calls to you through her glamour to come die in her embrace as she feeds off your spirit. Irresisistable, you will gladly succumb.

  1. Thank you for the giveaway. I follow APJ by email. I enjoy the style of JHAG. So far I’ve only tried Citizen Queen, Lady Vengenace and Calamity J. I enjoy them all but CJ was my favorite of the three.

  2. Romano Ricci seems like a dreamboat. So jealous that you guys got to hang out! My signature pick of the Juliette has a Gun range is Mad Madame. Not for shrinking violets.

  3. Nice bottle! I like Juliette’s Anyway and Lady Vengeance. As for new perfumes, those that have a lot of oomph remind me of the perfumes of the 80s when I was growing up. For example, Rose de Nuit by Serge Lutens, and L’Agent Provocateur. I follow by email. 🙂

  4. Moon Dance sounds really pretty, I do like the classical style of perfumery.
The bad gnus is that I have never tried any from this line. Hopefully can remedy that!

  6. I follow by e-mail and facebook. Have never had experience with this line, but find the goth aspect fascinating, the just a little bit of trouble here facet of the line. Unusual perfumes must be treated with an open mind, rather like BPAL oils. I ordered a few samples from them, and was surprised how much I liked quite a few. Unusual, yes, but interesting and effective, finding them easy to wear, evocative and appropriate for everyday.

  7. Looks like you all had a wonderful time, and I loved reading about it in todays email. A new (to me) perfume that shocked me with its vintage vibe, is one I wore last night for the first time; Nicolai’s Maharadjah. Earthy, a bit skanky, spicy as hell. Reminded me of something straight out of the 40’s!

I’ve only tried Romantina and Miss Charming, and they’re both already on my want list! Either I got lucky with their frags, or they make amazing roses that make me want to try even more of them!

  9. I follow by email but of course get most links via Tresor anyway 🙂 When I wear Vero Profumo Rozy I am transported to what I think perfume used to smell like, rich with a touch of decadence, caressing the body. Does Moondance have this quality I wonder? Thank you for the Giveaway x

  10. Moon Dance definitely is one of those fragrances I’ve been intrigued by since reading about it for the first time, it sounds gorgeously mysterious, sultry and somehow bewitching. JHAG usually make florals resound with modernity and resolute beauty, I just love their touch in compositions and I am sure this one is another winner (from their exclusive line I have the sample of the previous launch, Oil Fiction, which I pick when I need something really special and luxurious smelling… I am pleased to see they’re slowly turning their attention from rose to tuberose and white florals).
What a wonderful and funny experience should have been to meet Romano Ricci in person, he looks so handsome and smart 🙂
I follow by mail and FB (DarkRose RoseDark in there).
Thanks for the lovely and generous giveaway!

  11. My only JHAG fragrance so far is Oil Fiction. It is a real wrist sniffer, and takes a while to get to know. My interest has been piqued. Aside from gorgeous smells, my other passion in life is for handbags, and it was through a Polish friend on a handbag forum that I learned of Juliette … My friend is a longtime devotee. The virtual world of internet has broadened and enhanced my life in a very real way.!

  12. Thanks for such a wonderful giveaway!!!

    Following by email.

I have both Midnight Oud and Mad Madame, but Moon Dance is way beyond and above those two, IMO.
After I had bought and tried a decant of Moon Dance, I wrote the following review:

“One of the most fascinating contradictions in perfume is when smelled directly on skin, it represents a carnal picture of dirt, while the sillage is of a heavenly light creaminess.

Moon Dance may be considered distant, but as it glides along in its smooth orbit (not unlike the most famous moondancing star ever), its -weightless- trail will lift and corrupt all bystanders, their jaws dropped to the ground.

    Eternally denoted as beautiful.”

Moon Dance, to me, wrote history…
It is, and probably always will be in my top five perfume list!

  16. I follow via bloglovin. I haven’t had the chance to try any of the JHAG fragrances yet – much to my own disappointment. But some fragrances that make me think of the past glory of perfumery is l’interdit. I love the era, and the fact that it was Audrey’s signature fragrance (and solely hers for a bit). I’d love to be the sole wearer of an amazing fragrance that someday became a hit! Thanks for the draw! (tweeted it as well!)

Although I’m not a Goth, I’ve got a bit of experience with this line. My favourite JHAG story is when I was given a sample of Not A Perfume by an Agence de Parfum rep to try on my wife, who is a supremely fussy, almost perfume-hater.

She didn’t like it, and that’s when I gave up trying to please her with perfume. However, I did, and used the sample myself. 🙂

  20. I follow by email. Thanks for this lovely draw. The perfume I tried recently that reminded me of the glorious perfumes of the past is Tom Ford’s Fleur de Chine. It has this slightly dusky and very complex feel that you just don’t see with many new releases anymore.

  23. Hi there lovelies, I follow by email and enjoy reading all of them! I am a huge JHAG fan, even though some of the frags don’t last long on my skin, but that doesn’t matter – i just spritz several times a day! Walking through a large winery complex not long ago, wearing Citizen Queen, a lady followed me for quite a while to ask me what I was wearing, she said it wafted past her as soon as I entered. Lovely compliment, glad others can smell it on me. Dying to try their new one. x
