Life, Friends, Collecting, Tea Towels

Hi there Beautiful APJers,

Friday is my birthday so I thought we should do something special and only mildly fragrant.

My life is pretty blessed, without going into great detail I feel pretty lucky and have been given an enormous amount of advantages and every now & then good fortune has shone down too. The friends that have shared my life are amazing, fun, self sufficient, supporting, driven, caring, whole hearted and thoughtful (as in Full Of Thought) people with whom I share the big & small triumphs and tragedies, time and sometimes cyberspace. My work is fulfilling and suitable, homelife is sunny & comfortable and I get to travel regularly.

Something that is quite obvious is how much I love to collect things, each piece in the house has a memory attached (or several) and even my wardrobe is filled with happy memories and momentoes, wearable pieces of my personal history and a joyful life shared around the world. There is art collected from nearly 30 years of world travel, my parents 6 seater Royal Doulton mid 1960s wedding-gift starter set is now a nearly full 20 seat set with all add ons. Books have been culled by 50% need another 30% to fit into this apartment and you know how crazy my fragrance collection is.

In that same way I started collecting Tea-Towels. Tea-Towels are the ubiquitous collection for travelers because they are light, transportable, reasonably priced, useful and beautiful. Every time I grab one from the drawer I can instantly see where I bought it or who gave it to me (yes, once people know you collect they feed your collection on their holidays too). I try to use them all in rotation but it is becoming less possible to see any one towel even once a year, which is starting to make me a little sad, which in turn is diminishing my enjoyment. There is also a question of space in the new apartment.

Tea Towels 2015

Time to cull. The Tea-Towels have all been washed. The ones that I grab and can be bothered to iron (yes, I know but I find ironing Tea-Towels zen) will get to stay and the rest will be making journeys around the world to grace your kitchens.

So here’s the deal, I know some of you also have Tea-Towel collections and many of you use them only as things to wipe dishes and tidy messes. It doesn’t matter how you use them, or if you’ve never used one before in your life. Here is a chance to be sent a little bunch of Tea-Towels that have my and my friends love, travels, home and away happy memories. What you will be getting is a little package of joy that can be used every day, just throw them in the washing machine after use and they come back to life ready to be used and loved again.

  1. I LOVE tea towels! I I actually collect magnets as my light, go-to travel souvenir but this tea towel idea is brilliant. The ones I have, I use. And I delight in them every day. I currently live in Australia and today I am wearing Chanel 1932.

  5. Happy birthday for tomorrow Portia! May you have as many happy returns as teatowels! Country: Australia, fragrance, Testa Maura Capo di Feno from yourself. (I liked the Aqua Vitae sample that came with it – very summery, used it all up). 🙂

  6. Australia. One of my faves from the early 1980s, long since sadly relegated to the rag bag, was from the Madura Tea Estates near Murwillumbah NSW. It showed a giant tea cup inside which a small sailboat battled heaving seas. Yes, its title:”Storm in a Tea Cup”. I eagerly follow you via email. Today Melbourne revisited winter and I warmed up with Cabochard.

  7. Hi Portia. I love tea towels too (though I despise ironing). I especially love calendar tea towels, as they remind me of my greatly-missed mum. She used to hang them in the kitchen via a piece of dowel top and bottom, then pin reminders and tickets and such to them. Thanks for bring back such lovely memories. ❤

I follow via FB and WordPress. xox

  10. Happy birthday to you! Mine is tomorrow and I get to eat cake. Or probably kale salad.
Today I wore Chanel Jersey to class, tough luck if they didn’t like it. Have you ever compared it with Caron Pour Homme, it is softer, but in a similar lavender vanilla vein.
I am in Australia and follow by email.

Happy, happy b’day to YOU and be on lookout for the little package.
We are also collectors around here. Brad and I both collect china, porcelain and numerous other things including seashells, shoes, rocks and minerals… We don’t consciously “collect” tea towels but never manage throw any away. B uses them all over the place all of the time.

  14. I, too, am a collector, especially of illustrated children’s books, little small decorative boxes, assorted art work, and of course, fragrance. I do so understand the sense of looking at certain things and remembering where you got them and what was happening in your life at the time. What a lovely idea to share that through your giveaway. I must think about doing that myself. Thank you for a wonderful idea.

  19. Happy Birthday! What a fabulous idea! Having just finished this damn kitchen remodel I’m totally in on a chance to win something special for it.
I’m in the US. My scent earlier was Tuberose Gardenia but that’s long gone and now after a bit of playtime with the pooches my scent is puppy spit from getting covered in kisses. I didn’t need that makeup I was wearing right?

  22. Happy Birthday dear Portia!! We just moved to a new place and I’ve have been trying to cull stuff too. This is such a sweet, personal giveaway and since I do use towels to wipe my dishes and hands I am totally game for this draw (what else do you use yours for?). I love the old-fashioned penpal-ness of it. Also the thought of bits of your memories traveling all over the world. Though I have never ironed them – I think my towels probably would benefit from ironing. but I can’t convince myself to do it. Must. iron. tea towels (or hand towels as my mom and I call them).

I follow by email (and also wordpress i think)

Also, I was trying to find your email id on your website but couldn’t. What’s the best way to contact you- fb message or email?
Never mind – your email is in the post..:)

And forgot to mention – I’m in the U.S and wearing OJ Tolu even though it hasn’t cooled down yet over here.

  23. Happiest of wishes to you, Portia, on your birthday and in the coming year. Your generous spirit is an inspiration.

I have been thinning out the contents of my closets and cupboards over the past months. Now that there are fewer things confronting me when I open a door or drawer, I feel like I have more room to breathe and live and think. The things that remain with me feel more useful, more loved, more important somehow. And it opens up space in my life for whatever comes next.

I follow via my gmail address. APJ is my one and only feed via e-mail. 🙂

  25. I do use tea towels, since I have no room for a dishwasher. I enjoy having nice ones, like some in a linen/cotton mix. So this giveaway is perfect!

I am in Norway and today was fairly sunny, so I used the edt Week-End by de Nicolaï. But it is time for a perfume rotation, I have already used some warmer scents with more amber and spices.

I follow by email and really enjoy this blog.I am sending birthday greetings across the seas and hope you will have a wonderful birthday.

  26. Happy Birthday, Portia. I wish you all the best in the upcoming year, especially you provide all the best to us on your blog.

I don’t travel much so what I have collected are books. They take me many, many places. And though I don’t write the purchase date and location in them, I can usually remember where I got them and why they attracted me at the time.

I think tea towels make a lovely gift — the only dishwasher at my place is me!

Didn’t wear any perfume today as I was doing day-long training of leaders for a chronic pain program. But I’m sure going to make for that this evening by wearing my recent thrift store discovery of Le Feu D’Issey! Definitely not a “safe for all occasions scent.”

I am still continuing to follow by email from Canada.

  27. My cousin’s British now-wife brought my aunt and mother tea towels from Harrod’s years ago, but I didn’t realize they were popular souvenirs. They are certainly easier to transport (and more practical) than snow globes. This is a lovely giveaway, and I am rooting for odbayar in Mongolia to be one of the winners. I myself am in the US, and wearing what is perhaps the opposite of Opus VII, the cheap and easy Yves Rocher Noix de Coco.

I hope you have a wonderful birthday, and many happy returns! xxx

  28. Happy birthday, Portia. May the coming year be filled with love, laughter and happiness.

I’m a big tea towel fan, too. For my niece and some of my friends’ kids I’ve managed to find some gorgeous ones that I’ve then framed (nothing fancy like a professional framer, as it’s easy enough to DIY it, even if your talents, like mine, don’t particularly lie in that area), which look fab up on the wall.

Today I’m wearing Rive Gauche, as I’m trying to encourage spring to arrive properly here in Melbourne (top temp today: 14 degrees (but I shouldn’t complain; at least it’s sunny)), and I follow by email.

Thank you, and all the best for your special day 🙂
