Hello Fellow Fumies,
At APJ we have a Saturday Question. Everyone gets to chime in with an answer, chat with other responders and it’s a fun event each week. Taking sides never means taking offence and everyone keeps it respectful and light, even though we can sometimes trawl the depths.
The idea is you’ll see it on the weekend or chime in through the week. Hopefully you will come back regularly and see if anyone has responded to your comment and you can reply to them. The aim is to generate real conversation and connection even though we are scattered around the globe.
Over 100 responses I will draw a Secret Scent Sample Pack (from my collection)
Last Weeks Winner: Didn’t make 100

Saturday Question: What Have You Thunked Lately?
I’m thinking that we might change out the Saturday Question for a What Have You Thunked each Saturday, just for a while to change things up and see how it goes. Please tell us what you think of the idea in the comments.
My Answer:
I have done a little thunking this week.
Avignon by CdG sample
I don’t know why this sample wass still hanging around. I also own a bottle but enjoyed wearing a much older one in sample form.
Rose Royale by PdN sample
I reviewed this one a while ago and had over half my 2ml sample left. Sprayed it all in one go. I was FRAGRANT!
Féminité du Bois by Serge Lutens sample
This is an early sample I got from The Posh Peasant (now defunct). Smelled wonderful. 1ml in one go.
Duel by Annick Goutal Shower Gel
A gift from my mate Tim. Loved having this bottle and it made wonderful bubbles
Madonna Truth or Dare Body Lotion
Honestly, I have about 8 of these tubes and felt it was time to get this one emptied. My whole body was a vanilla tuberose BOMB!
Nothing. I have never thunked anything, even a 1ml sample. The only bottles or vials I have ever emptied are because of evaporation. I clearly have too many fragrances and never get even remotely close to finishing a bottle.

That’s why I think this is such a good idea Greg. Using up stuff rather than let it evaporate or spoil.

I agree…I look at it this way, even if it’s something you really love better to use it than lose it…somewhere down the line there will be another fragrance that you love equally or even more, right?

I have thunked a shit-ton of crap from the Esxence over the years. Does that pass?

Yup, it counts…also giving stuff away counts….

If giving it away counts, then I have thunked heaps of stuff. I once took a box full of decants and samples to a fund raiser and let people pull one out for a $2 donation.

HA! Yep. It does but only if it’s empty, yeah?

Sometime in late November or early December I finished a travel spray of Atelier Cologne Sud Magnolia. I’ve also used up and thrown in the bin several small/travel size products from Rituals. And some sample vials from a selection with Italian theme bought years ago from StC. Oh yes, also binned a Davidoff sample, something supposed to conjure up the salty waves, but was so unpleasant to wear that I didn’t even want to pass it on!
Good idea to change the Saturday routine for a month or two. Or maybe have this question once every month?

P, you are on a thunk roll!!! I don’t ever remember you thunking anything!
as the thunk queen I don’t mind having this as a temporary saturday question…I think it helps to keep me mindful of using up what I have and enjoying it (rather than hoarding that last drop of a sample or decant only to lose it to evaporation).
In my lifetime I have thunked about 500 full bottles…yup, no exaggeration (I have been at this obsession…err…hobby since 1970ish) . Now I am working on samples and decants before moving on to full bottles (because those don’t evaporate…at least I don’t think so)
This week I thunked all of my daughter’s Bon Perfumery decants because in her saving them they evaporated to about 1/4 of the small decant and she finally decided to just let me use them up. I also thunked the last few drops of Estate Vetiver, one last spray of Encense Mythique and Unum Passion…pretty soon I think I will be done with my sample of Kulfi.

Oh I’ve thunked plenty but didn’t use that word for it and rarely talked about it.

Hey Matty,
I buy mainly 2ml spray samples from the decanters nowadays but there are hundreds of 1ml vials that I have had a single or multiple swipe from. These are what I need to be using up. There are also hundreds of 5ml and 10ml decants, they’ll be next.
Up until this year when I married Jin I was debt free (I am now helping him pay for his half of our apartment as fast as we can) and most of my spare income went to travel, food and fragrance. There’ll be a lot less buying in the next 4 years.

Some of the perfume retailers here will make and sell you samples of almost anything they stock, Matty. I’ve bought them from Bloom, Les Senteurs, Roullier White and Jovoy. And many of the smaller perfume brands will sell you a sample redeemable against a bottle if you decide you love it. (Bloom does themed packs of samples each month, too, which can make for interesting explorations.)

There’s no way I could have afforded to buy them at proper prices !!!! My friend has a vast collection as well. She always rings me when she gets something new so I can go round to her house for a lavish spray.I think I’ve mentioned this before…2 of my grandaughters know I love perfume. One of them saved up and bought me Mitsouko last Christmas, the other one bought me Chance.Bought with thought and love. I don’t thunk anything often. Part hoarding tendency to keep the precious samples as well as anxiety about separating from the opportunity to sniff them at my will. Thankfully I haven’t had issue with evaporation but I really need to wear and enjoy my many samples and bottles.I just enjoy the pursuit of sniffing new scents so much! My spending budget is smaller these days and therefore, 2019 will be a year of thunking! This thunking post if fun for a change, however I sense that APJ followers are not generally thunkers!
I did thunk two 2ml samples of Blocki This Grand Affair which was a sign, and therefore I purchased a bottle for myself as a Christmas gift. I can’t wait to open the packaging and enjoy more of this scent in a couple days!

Hey Kathleen,

I finished off a 3ml decant of Close Up in one fell swoop this week! I’ve also thunked 3 x 7.5 ml bottles of Chanel extraits that were evaporating this year. Plus multiple 1-2 ml sample vials. I haven’t finished a full edp bottle in about 15 years since I discovered niche perfumery, but in my younger days I went through many bottles of Giorgio, Ysatis, Byzance, Poison, Allure and Cabotine. I have a half full bottle of PHI Rose de Kandahar I’m aiming to finish in 2019!

I have no idea what thunked means. Is it that you threw it out? Or that you used it up? If the latter, I haven’t emptied a bottle in about 10 years. Too many to thunk.

Unless I count offloading, I don’t thunk very much at all. As far as samples go, the ones I really like I tend to keep the last few drops/sprays as I want to have some around. The ones I don’t really care for I either give away, don’t want to waste precious skin time or just forget about altogether. As far as bottles go, since I fell down the ole’ rabbit hole, I have used up two 15 ml bottles of Vetiver Tonka and one 50 ml bottle of Eau des Merveilles. I’m close to finishing a 75 ml Coromandel but I’ll be sad when that one’s gone.
LikeLike
I bet that’s a Coromandel EdT Gigi! My advice is don’t rebut for a year so you have some breathing space between the versions. That way you’ll smell the bones not the nuance and be happy to have your love back.

Well, I DO count unloading = thunking! A friend on the other side of the country is a new perfumista, so at the end of the year I send her a big bunch samples and decants. The first year I wrapped them individually as a sort of advent calendar, but that was pretty tiring. Anything she doesn’t like is passed along to her non-perfumista mother and her friend.

Portia, this is a motivational question! Keep it for a while or come back to it from time to time, we’re up for anything. Personally, I don’t thunk bottles. I still have an empty Le Monde Est Beau bought when I didn’t even know the word “perfumista”. I like its shape so I’ve kept it. I know, I know, it’s impractical, I’ll have to get rid of it one day. I did thunk a decant of Swarowski Aura not long ago, it was horrible on me so I used as room spray. There were a couple samples I’d emptied, just need to remember what they were, or thunk some new ones!

See I think I am sort of opposed to thunking – and I don’t count offloading. That’s a different thing to me. Don’t like it or won’t wear it, so pass it on. That’s not a thunk exactly really is it?
Thunking to me is finishing something and when I do that I almost always have got more waiting or on it’s way! And when I get a sample or decant of something l love I buy a bottle when I can and use the decant to take in my bag to freshen up my perfume during the day or to use when traveling.
So literally speaking, yes I have thunked. I’ve done through bottles of Le Labo Bergamot and Neroli and Heeley Sel Marin in the early days when that was mostly what I wore. I’ve gone through I Miss Violet and L’Atessa. And the travel sprays of Bombay Bling. But I also still have all of these perfumes replenished. I’m lucky I know! I spent years with no money for anything but rent, thrift store clothes, and books – food was a distant third – but now I’ve got some cash this is one of my indulgences.

as in a magic bottle that never empties, so never has to be discarded?

Late to the thunk party, but I’m doing my bit. Samples/decants thst have bit the dust recently include Tiger’s Nest (from PPP). Hoarded the crap out of it because I needed to be able to get a sniff in. Finally put on my big girl pants and sprayed the last bit during a sleepless night last night. Anubis is gone 😢. Salome and Dryad should technically be done too, but I’m leaving a drop or so in each one for future reference. One of them will be the sole new bottle purchase of 2019. Possibly decants of the others. But, definitely no more bought samples will be ordered. Without the influx of samples, thunking in 2019 is on track.
