Hi APJ,
A SOTD (Scent Of The Day) thread is a really good conversation generator. The idea is youโll chime in through the week with whatever scent you are wearing. You don’t need to be super knowledgable, have high faluting tastes or be a published author to comment. Just tell us what fragrance you’re wearing, smelling, buying etc. and how it makes you feel and/or anything else about it that tickles your fancy.
You can also comment on everyone else choices too. It’s great to tell someone how much you love their choice, ask for more info about it, the house or perfumer. There’s someone here from around the world 24/7 and perfume people love to chat.
SOTD 25.2 – 3.3.2019
You probably won’t have time to write every scent, every spritz but whenever you feel the mood take you share your current spritz and a few things about it. Maybe you love/loathe it, want it, are excited by the notes/bottle/SA who sold it: WHATEVER! As always here at APJ, taking sides never means taking offence and everyone keeps it respectful and light, even though we can sometimes trawl the depths.
Hopefully you will come back and see if anyone has responded to your comment and you can reply to them.
Go To It Crew.

Yes, well you are in a way spot on as one of the participants said that I am kinda teaching it like a class rather than a more traditional book talk. Thus far I have actually gotten good feedback, even from the complainer-LOL! The expert continues to annoy me though because she keeps offering up suggestions when she sees me at work and I have to gently decline. I don’t know why she signed up for a beginners intro to mindfulness if she already knows so much?

Next time the โexpertโ offers up a suggestion why donโt you ask her if she would like to take over the talk!
I did something similar today. I was in bumper to bumper traffic and the a$$hole behind me kept honking. I finally stormed out of my car and him if he would like to pass me. Of course there was nowhere for him to go. He shut up right quick.

In a cinema here in my hometown they’re playing documentaries the whole week and most of the tickets were sold in advance but my friend couldn’t go so she gave me her tickets. I’ve watched a Spanish documentary about mantras and kirtan and it’s positive influence in everyday life, one about “sinning” and not regretting it by an Iranian author and one Danish documentary by a young woman who was filming her mother after her husband had died in an accident and how she coped with it.
On Friday I’ve got tickets for “Studio 54” and the after party with seventies disco music ๐

I watched studio 54 and thoroughly enjoyed it. I frequented the place but that was way after everything so it was basically just a dance club at that point (no celebrities). It also made me a bit nostalgic and I watched some documentaries on NYC in the 70s and 80s on youtube after that.

Byredo Baudelaire, last wear to make sure I dont regret selling it and yes, it is going. It is just ok for me but ultimately redundant because it does not really add much to its style and there are lot more interesting leathers with a sweet touch. Overall, I am finding myself not to be very much impressed with Byredo.
LikeLike
I feel the same way Fazal. Iโve tried quite a few Byredos over the past year. Theyโre just okay in terms of fragrance. When speaking to their longevity and sillage I find them to be far below average. Although, maybe thatโs what theyโre aiming for. In any event, not my bag.
LikeLike
Yeah, they tend not to be big on sillage and projection; two exceptions may be original versions of pulp and maybe, maybe 1996 but I have not worn either of them properly. If I end up keeping any Byredo, it might be Pulp (I have the original version and since its one of the most popular ones, selling it anytime should not be an issue), Bal d’Afrique and maybe 1996. That means 2-3 Byredos are going at the minimum which are bullion, baudelaire, and encens chembur. Not sure if I have any other from the brand. All were blind buys and during initial hype, plus getting good deals also played a factor.
LikeLike
Good luck unloading the ones you donโt want. Bal dโAfrique seems to enjoy some popularity as well. And yes, Pulp.

Byredo is a good point of entry into the perfume world for my friends, it has such a wide distribution here. It fits in perfectly with Scandinavian fashion and what is seen as appropriate scent wise in this corner of the world. I admit I have not yet found a favorite!

Itโs interesting to get your perspective Ingeborg. Is this a popular line where you live (Denmark, I think?). Or, more a beginnerโs guide to niche-ish? Iโm always curious who the target consumer is with some houses. I would imagine Byredo would be 30-ish? Young professionals?

But here’s what annoys me some, i load up my scent before i leave home, i go into the kitchen at work and someone else in there smells amazing! Perhaps i’ve become immune to myself!! Or maybe they spray as they are walking in?
And… I’m confessing, yes i broke the no-buy and blind bought Queen Latifah, Queen of Hearts, and CK Eternity Air. Always nervous buying testers at super dooper prices but when they are so heavily discounted i cant stop myself. I mean, at that price who cares if i only wear it sometimes – or end up gifting it away. (basically i have no will power!!) All very suitable office scents, they may be better suited to a little warm as thankfully its rather cool in the office as its extremely warm outside.

I tried something a bit different on Monday – a mystery perfume. It’s a vintage mini bottle that I found in an antiques store. It’s Japanese and has the words “Tori Kosui Nippo Keshohin Seizobu” on it. The glass stopper has an embossed image of a bird (maybe a crane?) on it. I can’t make any kind of sense out of it, other than that kosui is a Japanese sweet. The fragrance itself smelled a bit of citrus and aromatics, maybe some pine? A bit too much like household cleanser for mine. Like a lot of vintage, it was gone very quickly.
Today is more back to normal, wearing Nicolai New York.

Another beautiful sunny day and I’m wearing Penhaligon’s Savoy Steam from Portia’s sample pack some time ago. It was a huge sample so I could test it properly. In the beginning it was strange in an unpleasant way and I didn’t care much for it. I still cannot describe it but meanwhile that my sample is running very low, I like it much more. The strangest part is the opening – It feels dry, the rosemary eating up the citrus in the top notes and soon it becomes softer, flowery but with an edible quality, probably cardamom. I think it’s just right for springtime and after my rocky relationship with it in the beginning I like it a lot.

Well, March 1st, so spring is around the corner, right? Right? RIGHT? ๐ At least we get to fool around with the time this month.
Iโm wearing Hepcat ๐. Courtesy of Mrs. M. Itโs supposed to be a tobacco/vetiver + cherry thing. I believe this is the one that prompted Mrs. M to utter those immortal words: ……and the cherry REALLY POPPED!! ๐๐
On me, this plays out as a refined, light leather anointed with a whiff of florals and freshened up with vetiver. Delicious!

Ha!! I forgot I said that!!! But it DID pop in the cold ๐๐
I could see it reading as leather on your skin. It’s an interesting one that shifts. In warmer climate it reads more powdery on mine.

In the evening I’ll go to the cinema to watch the documentary about Studio 54 and afterwards is a party with seventies disco music. I’ll wear my Giorgio Armani which is from 1984 but okay…

The Limelight in NYC? The church that was converted into a dance club? Would you believe that I performed there? I was a member of a punk rock ballet company and it was a fashion show featuring Betsy Johnson clothes. We also performed at CBGBs…that was interesting ๐คฃ

Punk rock ballet? Wow, I had you slotted as a sugar plum fairy!! And Betsy Johnson was already a thing? I meant the Limelight on Montreal, which is kind of hysterical. It was a gay club which my girlfriend and I did not know!! We loved it cuz there were always so many guys and they ALL enjoyed dancing ๐๐

marcella- while I was a traditional ballerina I NEVER turned down a paid gig! and yes, Betsy Johnson was in vogue in the early 80s. Would you believe I still have an outfit of hers that I bought in one of her boutiques on Columbus Avenue in the 1980s? and would you believe that it still fits-LOL!

Please tell me there are pictures, b!
Betsey Johnson is a bloody superstar. LOVE her. The one thing I bought–I think from that same place on Columbus, if not from Patricia Field’s shop downtown–was in a suitcase of treasures that was nicked when I was at college.
I had *insane* amounts of fun that year in NYC. I didn’t sleep a whole lot, was broke as hell, but, blimey, I had a good time. Lots of dancing. (God, I miss being able to dance.)

crikey- sadly no pictures! and even sadder I gave away all of my Betsy Johnson outfits except the one I saved because I wore it when I turned 21. (what was I thinking?). I bet you had a blast being in NYC for a year. I did most of my clubbing in the early to mid 80s…we must have just missed each other. I too miss dancing with reckless abandonment…those were the days!

Oh Brigitte, I wish I could have seen you dancing, the clubs in NYC and the atmosphere in the late seventies/early eighties. It was the best time of my life here in my corner of the world. The music was glorious!

Neva yes!!!! the music was amazing, right? did you like Abba too? Every time I hear Dancing Queen I think of that time! I swear it was like a natural high..the dancing in those clubs….we would sweat like crazy dancing all night long and head back home at 5am with the streets of NYC so quiet and somber….did you ever watch the movie Breakfast at Tiffany’s? That is what it was like….early dawn hours the streets of Manhattan…..
btw, how was the Studio 54 documentary? did you love it? and how was your night of dancing????
LikeLike
Oh everything was great. The documentary was more focused on the motivation of the owners of Studio 54, their rise and downfall. The story is very interesting. We didn’t stay long afterwards because it took place in the theater and we had to split around midnight.
I remember very well the nights I stayed out until the morning and the feeling when the first rays of sunlight hit you when you come out of the club. I hope I’ll experience it again some day. I’m surely working on it ๐

Wowzers! I must have been completely out of the loop. Betsy Johnson only appeared on my radar when my youngest daughter wanted/needed/insisted upon one of her dresses for her high school grad dance. That was 2007! I had never heard of her till that point. But, I could have told you who made the finest breeches, where to get custom-made riding boots and what the most comfortable dressage saddle was. Priorities!

Ha! different priorities is right! I bought most of my Betsy Johnson stuff in the early 80s and did not even realize she was still popular in the mid 2000s! I bet my outfit is considered vintage now-LOL!

Hahaha! That brings to mind something I may well watch on TV tonight on PBS. Engelbert Humperdinck in Hawaii!! LOL! I frequently chat up an Italian gentleman in the gym (fine-looking, btw), he sings softly in between sets. I commented on his beautiful voice. He used to be a professional and told me if I ever saw this special on PBS to watch it. Apparently, good old Engelbert is still in fine form. My mother would have been delighted!

Wearing my newly-found D&G Pour Homme today. Further research puts this quite definitely as the pre-reform, which is good. I did get a little lemon at the outset, but this is very much a lavender scent now. Reviews suggest that this is a dad scent but, since I’m a grand-dad, that makes it for younger men, right?

yeah, well I woke up this morning to more crap snow…we need to remove it because it will be followed by freezing rain and then more snow and if the first layer doesn’t get removed then we are looking at a sheet of ice on the driveway which will remain as next week calls for single digits Fahrenheit …..spring? where are you?
Right now eau naturelle but after post snow removal shower might go with Brigitte…a custom perfume Sarah Horowitz made for me in 1998 when her company was called Creative Scentualizations with notes of grapefruit, lilac, violet, sandalwood , vanilla and musk. It’s very comforting.

no not the absolute favorite but I am really digging it…haven’t smelled it in 20 years…..I think my absolute favorite right now is still Reglisse Noire..while I love Casablanca it isn’t as versatile as Reglisse. What a GREAT question, Neva!!!!!

The notes in it are grapefruit, lilac, violet, sandalwood, vanilla and musk. Sarah Horowitz made it when my first child was still a baby and I wanted a very soft scent that would not offend anyone. I wrote to her “not too loud, floral or spicy”. I still have a copy of the original letter I sent her along with her letter in response and the original sales brochure since back in the day there was no internet and orders went through via mail or phone call with credit card. Back then the company was called Creative Scentualizations whereas now it is called Sarah Horowitz Parfums.
I still think it’s perfect for what I wanted it to be. But I might have added more sandalwood and maybe some iris and heliotrope and a basmatti rice note? I think those notes would also create a soft billowy vibe. I will be curious as to what my girls think about it because they have never smelled it before and I wrote in my original letter that I would want to pass it on to my eldest (who was an only child at that time). They don’t know yet that they are paying for it as my bday present this year-LOL!!!

What are you reading? and you AND Mr. Crikey smell divine! Suddenly Mr. Marzipan has developed a very very very mild interest in fragrance. He has been asking questions that he has never asked me before. He is also wearing on a regular basis a homemade lavender body lotion that I made and First Cut when he wants me to be frisky with him. The wonders of the Universe….as this was the same man that used to complain whenever I wore something that was “too strong”.

Patricia Wentworth’s Benbow Smith series. They are pretty awful, but quite charming. I might just be too–easily-entertained by the talking parrot, though.
Well, clearly there are significant benefits for Mr Marzipan when he wears fragrance ๐ Talk about positive reinforcement!! If that doesn’t encourage him, I don’t know what will.
In just the last few years, mr crikey has become an almost daily fragrance wearer who rather enjoys the ritual of choosing his scent. Though he still screws up his face and looks a bit worried when he spritzes, like it might fly out of the bottle and bite him.
