Classic Patchouli by Von Eusersdorff 2011

I love patchouli. Always have done. I used to wear so much of it that it turned my neck a deep amber colour. I was once stopped by a couple of coppers as I walked through the streets of Bristol. The asked me if I was aware of what kind of people wore patchouli and suggested it could get me into trouble. No comment.

Many years later my love of patchouli remains, although I do not wear it as much as I did in those heady hippie punk days of the mid seventies. As my affair with perfume deepened and I started to read about the notes in perfumes, it was interesting to see how many fragrances that I would never dream of trying contained patchouli and I was quite surprised. As I delved in further I started to notice phrases like “clean patchouli”. STOP. I think not.

Random fact. In 1985 Mattel used patchouli oil in the plastic of Stinkor in the Masters of the Universe line of toys. Makes you wonder who designed them.

Now guys, if proper patchouli is not your thing, then Von Eusersdorff´s Classic Patchouli will not change your mind. However if you have never tried proper patchouli then you absolutely must.

Von Eusersdorff´s Classic Patchouli is a dark, thick, rich, stylish, graceful, distinguished, dignified, classic hardcore patchouli. The patchouli rests on a bed of vanilla and tonka bean and sandalwood. There is a dash of bergamot in the opening. Beautifully blended and perfect for the heat. Patchouli and naked skin. For anyone except maybe the men in blue.

Classic Opoponax by Von Eusersdorff 2015

An Immaculate Oriental……

You know when I first met Portia and we decided I would sometimes write posts for APJ I had absolutely no idea at all that I would be sat here more than two years later. Not only that but that I would also shoot down to Italy to attend the perfume shows. It is kind of funny really. I absolutely love going to them, and have no intention of stopping. And yet I am so hesitant to try anything new. The older I get the more überfussy I have become. (Don´t believe that. I have always been very selective.)

Fragrantica gives these featured accords:
Top: Rose, jasmine
Heart: Opoponax, sandalwood, benzoin
Base: Castoreum, amber, patchouli, vanilla

Classic Opoponax was one of the very few (you could count them on one hand) of the new launches I was absolutely excited to try. I spent an hour searching through the Campomarzio party guests for Camille Henfling Junior, founder of Von Eusersdorff and an absolutely lovely bloke. I say searching because there was about 500 guests in about a 50 square meter area and it was dark – it took a while!

Opoponax is also known as opobalsam, which explains its resiny feel. It is also known as sweet myrrh, in contrast to the bitter myrrh which is more commonly used in medicines, both Ayurvedic and Western. Sweet myrrh has been used for at least two thousand years in incense and perfumes and comes primarily from Somalia and Ethiopia. Von Eusersdorff’s Classic Opoponax feels slightly sticky when you spray generously, which you need to do to do it justice. Hence the solid comfortable 100 ml bottle.

Classic Opoponax is Von Eusersdorff’s sixth fragrance. Each fragrance is concentrated around a single note and all are of a very high standard. Elegant and handsome. Classic Opoponax no exception. It is a flawless oriental. Warm and thick, sweet and resinous, heady and quietly opulent. No spices. Very contemporary. It opens with a wonderfully sweet rose along with jasmine and takes you on a seamless ride into the heart of opoponax and on into the base of amber and patchouli, vanilla and a dab of castoreum. It all seems so effortless, which means it was not.

Classic Opoponax will be a summer perfume for me. I love rich sweet orientals in the heat. I find they stay very flat on the skin in cold weather. And no, 10 mls is definitely not enough.

Classic Orange by Camille Henfling for Von Eusersdorff 2013

Hi APJ,

It’s summer in the Northern Hemisphere and all the perfumes blogs are talking about citrus scents. I must confess I’ve never been a citrus kind of girl. I like them but can’t say I ever really crave smelling like one. Except perhaps lime or grapefruit…those notes I seem to like. Orange and lemon, well, that’s another story.

Scent memories can make or break a perfume. My problem with orange and lemon is that a lot of household cleaners smell like them and that makes me think of cleaning the house when I smell them. I like a clean house. I like the smell of a clean house. I don’t want to smell like a clean house.

Classic Orange by Camille Henfling for Von Eusersdorff 2013

Fragrantica gives these featured accords in one line:
Blood orange, petitgrain, suede, Chinese osmanthus, black tea, sandalwood, musk.

Which brings us to Classic Orange by Von Eusersdorff. I got a sample from Cookie Queen and decided to not judge a perfume by its name and give a citrus perfume a whirl. Others have said it’s a realistic orange and have mentioned all the wonderful notes and nuances in it. Okay, let’s see.

(spritz, spritz)

Well, it’s orange but I wouldn’t call it classic. It’s rather sweet without much of the citrus tang I’m used to. As I grab the OJ from the fridge to sniff for comparison I realize I smell like orange soda more than orange juice. The perfume is sweeter than the oranges I’m used to perhaps because it’s a blood orange note. I’ve tried blood oranges and they do taste and smell different from a navel orange. They also don’t smell like the classic orange scent to me which means that I’m actually liking smelling like orange soda.

Wait a minute, let’s go to the liquor cabinet. Triple sec? No. Curaçao? Oh…maybe… To me, Classic Orange is somewhere between orange soda and blue curaçao. There’s a tiny bit of green with a floral note too once the initial sweetness dies down a bit. Unlike most citrus notes which don’t last long, the orange does linger here right to the end. So Classic Orange isn’t that classic to me but I do enjoy it. I can’t say I would buy a bottle but I can see myself using up what I have of it. It’s cheery, uncomplicated, and easy to wear like a favorite sundress.

On my skin the projection isn’t spectacular and it wears very close within 30 minutes of spraying. Also, it is still detectable a few hours later which is impressive for a citrus.

Classic Mimosa by Camille Henfling Jr for Von Eusersdorff 2011

.

Post by Val the Cookie Queen

.

Yeah, right. Classic Mimosa? Thoughts of wedding bouquets and baby breath fillers in my head. That is exactly what I want to smell of. Not.

I have had a good sized sample sat around in my perfume stash for a while now. I have disorders when it comes to fragrance, as we all do. I have a lot, and wear but a few, and I am apprehensive, nay, scared to death to try something totally new on my skin. Eventually I succumb.

Fresh out of the shower I took my chances and administered an ample spritz of …

Classic Mimosa by Camille Henfling Jr for Von Eusersdorff 2011

Fragrantica gives these featured accords:
Top: Neroli, bergamot, green leaves
Heart: Mimose, violet, rose, sea notes
Base: Musk, orange blossom, vanilla

From the Von Eusersdorff  site: “Floral designs ubiquitous from the end of the nineteenth century are rare today ………… The design for the Von Eusersdorff label brings back the flower as the traditional ornament for fragrances.” “Inspiringly Different Fragrances.”

This is an enchanting fragrance. To say I was stunned would be an understatement. I didn´t see that coming. It is really classy and smells expensive. It is very feminine. Opening with a burst of citrus, it quickly goes into flower mode. Violet, rose, and of course the mimosa. None of the flowers really take a star roll. I can smell the violet because I am into violet at the moment and make an effort to locate it when I know it is in a fragrance. Despite how it sounds it is not overly sweet, and hovers in a gorgeous haze over the skin. As it goes into the dry down it does warm up with vanilla, and becomes a little musky. It remains fresh and light throughout, smelling as beautiful at the end as it did at the beginning. For spring, summer and the office and any other time you need a lift.

Camille Henfling Jr is the creative maestro behind the Von Eusersdorff label, and is actually a descendant of the Von Eusersdorff family. The German family traded in rare oils and flower essences for more than three centuries. Camille Henfling Jr. studied in Grasse to hone his skills, and stepped in to revamp the family business.

The line was launched in 2010 with Classic Patchouli. Also included in the five fragrance line up is Classic Myrrh, Classic Vetiver and Classic Orange.

I have used up nearly 10mls now. Undisputedly fabulous. It is timeless, chic, elegant and smart. Just like me. Not.

Seriously, I am thrilled to have discovered this. I shouldn´t get such set ideas in my head as to what is going to be good and what isn´t. So forgive me Mr Henfling for having procrastinated so long. If the others are as good as this I have a treat waiting. As patchouli remains my favorite note, that is going to be my next!

Classic Mimosa – highly recommended.
