Hello friends, it’s Narth here falling in love with a leather just in time for the summer heat.

I’ve only pottered about with the house Les Liquides Imaginaires until now, sniffing nozzles and spraying cards after testing other things. It was never on my radar, the name and bottles having failed to immediately appeal. But I was generously given a sample by  the Libertine Parfumerie section in Myer, Melbourne after I’d been blathering about fragrance to the sales person. It’s gone straight to the top of my wishlist.

Hey there APJ.

As most of you know I spent a week in Scotland recently.   I have wanted to go my whole life and finally got it together to organise a trip.  Well, we booked  flights and our beyond dear friend Kirk, who has cropped up in my posts over the years did the organising.  We just had to get there.   He would be waiting at the airport with a car.  Our flight was from Munich to Edinburgh, so what better way to start the trip than to sleepover in Munich and go to the Oktoberfest?

Flore by Carolina Herrera

Hello my friends! It’s Narth here from from marvellous Melbourne. I hope you’re all enjoying your change of seasons whether you’re cooling off or finally warming up as we are down under. The air is full of scents! Freesias are magically appearing everywhere and flowering trees are glorious with fragrance! It’s been been a beautiful Spring.. I’ve been wearing a discontinued beauty, Carolina Herrera Flore which was released in 1994.

Flore by Carolina Herrera 1994

Rosendo Mateu and Carlos Benaim

Fragrantica gives these featured accords:
Top: Aldehydes, Bergamot, Fruiits, Green notes
Heart: Rose, Lilac, Iris, Jasmine, Lily of the Vally
Base: Iris, Sandalwood, Musk

I have treasured my 30ml tester I got at Perfume Connection, a long gone mainstay of shopping centers. Their tester sales were amazing because they had so many bottles squirreled away that were never seen in department stores. But now it was time to hunt down a replacement as my little 30ml was on it’s last dregs and I am an ABUNDANT sprayer.

I knew it was likely to be a different colour but those ebay pics were so very bleached out, surely it would only be faintly different? NOPE! We have water and we have whiskey! I was quite nervous, what if this was just some flat floral and had none of the bright depths of my beloved little brown Flore? Well friends I am happy to report that after extensive testing they are identical. The only differences are in my overly susceptible imagination.

This is a beautiful scent that evolves and morphs with the weather. In the winter the fruits come out, lying on a bed of greens. It’s a floral with a heart of tropical jungle reminding me that better days are coming. In the warmth of spring the lily of the valley is radiant, it’s just so very happy in the sunshine. While Carolina Herrera Flore gets compared to lily of the valley scents like Diorissimo this is a very different perfume, rich and juicy in contrast to the more proper lily of the valleys. It’s less office and more rolling around in a field of flowers. It’s sweet, the way freesias and daphnes are sweet, that delicious floral sweetness you just want to drink in. Carolina Herrera Flore makes me very happy!

Have you ever had dramatically different coloured bottles of the same fragrance and what differences in the scent did you detect?

Chanel No. 19 Vintage – My Experience

Hi APJ, how are you doing?

Yay – I recently bought a bottle of vintage Chanel No. 19 Extrait! I can remember so many years ago wearing No. 19, especially in the warmer months and loving it. I wanted to experience the emotions of joy and strength again.

Chanel No. 19 used to be one of my absolute favorite perfumes to wear over twenty years ago. The memory of the seasons shifting in Vienna made me want to revisit No. 19 again. Following the dark grey days of winter, the sun would inevitably come out and ring in spring. Ever so slowly the trees started to come alive again with the bright young green leaves and when the sun rays shone upon them pure joy washed over me lifting off the weight upon my shoulders during my commute.

Farewell Robert Herrmann. Dress Code by Guerlain

Hello APJ, Our dear Robert Herrmann has left this mortal coil and moved onto the next great adventure. He wrote for APJ early on and was plucked by CFB to reach a far wider audience. Always fun, he had a wicked sense of humour and was kind. I liked him. Now he has gone and I thought the best way to remember him was to revisit his last post for us.
Robert is survived by his gorgeous husband Ron who has kept us updated and informed about his illness with wit and charm. We all are hugging you Ron.

Wait.

You HAVEN’T tried Dress Code yet???!!! Go order a sample/decant/bottle RIGHT NOW!!
You’re welcome.

I had been waiting for this since first hearing about the pre-release in the summer of ’15. It was at that time strictly a limited edition, and would only be available at 2 select retailers in the USA and at the Guerlain flagship store in Paris. So faster than you can say “Thierry Wasser” three times, I popped online and found ONE bottle available at Bergdorf’s in NYC. Three minutes later that bottle was on it’s way to my house…..

Now fragheads who know me, know that I am absolutely a Guerlain Ho’ of the ‘nth degree, hell I have one whole shelf in my Perfume cabinet stuffed full, and dedicated exclusively to Guerlain. New Guerlain offering? Come to Papa! Every. Single. Time.

Habit Rouge Dress Code by Guerlain 2015

Thierry Wasser

Fragrantica gives these featured accords:
Top: Bergamot, neroli, rose
Heart: Spices
Base: Woodsy notes, leather, tonka bean, praline, vanilla

Aaaahhh Dress Code. Guerlain certainly hit it out of the ballpark with this wonderful flanker!

The regular HR has long been in my top 5, and a few years back I was lucky enough to purchase a vintage mid-90’s new-in-mint-condition bottle thanks to the largess of a Facebook fragrance friend. (Looking at YOU, Jake!❤❤❤)

But about Dress Code…..

Let’s just say that Mr. Sulu would give Dress Code his “oh myyyyyyyy” stamp of approval.

Do you love a fabulous Gourmand? HRDC opens with a huge blast of caramel/chocolate/vanilla which within minutes adds a wispy back note of orange blossom.

Right away however the spices and rose peek through, followed by a resin/leather and woody vibe.

All perfectly blended and seamlessly drifting in and out with no single note taking up the spotlight. Just a gorgeous amalgam which like the energizer bunny, just keeps going and going and going….there’s a smoky aspect as well, as if the spices have been roasting over an open fire with some tonka thrown in for good measure.

By this time HRDC is firmly established in the drydown phase and swear-to-god if asked for a comparison, I would say that to me it’s solidly rooted in Shalimar territory. But purposely skewed masculine, although I suspect a woman would feel TOTALLY comfortable wearing this, especially to buttress up a “take-no-prisoners” attitude.

And HRDC has attitude.
In spades.
That first edition sold out in a heartbeat, but have no fear because Guerlain re-released it last year with their updated bottle. EXACTLY same perfume, just different packaging despite what you may read online. It’s the same, trust me.

And so for creating HRDC, and then bringing it back….Thank you Guerlain. Love it..

Sadly Australia isn’t getting Dress Code but it’s available in Guerlain in major department stores of Europe & USA

Have you tried Dress Code yet? What other Guerlain’s do you adore? (I know right? There are so many!)

Well hello APJ

I am roaming around Scotland as you read this, although I am sat here writing it a good week beforehand.  It is gonna be the shortest post ever as I am up to my eyeballs in cookie dough, packing, decanting, and attempting an online checkin.  altho I lived in England for some years I never made it up to Scotland.  I have always wanted to go and we finally booked a week there.  A couple of days in Edinburgh and the we will head up to Fort William and see that happens along the way.  What scents am I taking?

ETRO: Fragrant Italian Sunshine

Narth

.

Hello my friends! My name is Narth an I’m looking forward to chatting with you about our wonderful world of scent. I have been a perfume fan since 2004 when something went off in my brain and I thought oh.. SCENT! My hobbies are fragrance, food and reading translated Korean fiction. I will make these things collide whether they want to or not!

I’ve always loved a house that’s as familiar as a home when it comes to perfume. Where you sigh and enjoy that this is definitely a Chanel and even if it’s not your favourite it’s a well loved place to be. Etro is one such house that has bought me much joy. Begun in 1968 as a family Italian fashion house, today it’s run by the founder’s four children. In their wide range of perfumes they have created some true classics. I wear these a lot and find myself thinking about the way each one has a familiar splash of sunshine in the notes, but what it brings out varies greatly. So let’s take a brief tour in the Italian sun.

Hey, hey APJ! How has September been treating you all?

There is a tangible chill in the air. After months of dry heat, it is finally a bit crisp in the mornings and evenings. The days are warmish, even with sun sitting lower in the sky. For the first time in months I have needed to wear a cardigan on the school run and with that comes the need to pull out the duvets, organize my jumpers and wear sneakers instead of sandals.

Hermès: Summer of Hermessences!

Hey there APJ! How is everyone doing?

Summer is my absolute favorite season. The long bright sunny days full of warmth hitting every pore of my body make my heart pulsate with pure joy. Barefoot feet, leisurely days by the pool side, lazy mornings sleeping in and days where I can decide on a whim or fancy what to do take years of stress and weight off of my shoulders. This is cherished time with my son who enjoys summer as much as or if not more than I do.
